Are you motivated to play an active role in Europe’s clean energy transition? smartEn is the European business association of the Flexible Demand Management Industry. Our 100+ members create opportunities for every home, car and business to support a reliable and decarbonised EU energy system by activating their demand-side flexibility.

smartEn is recruiting a Senior Policy Officer to monitor regulatory developments impacting flexible energy demand and prosumer business models, and help shape and execute the association’s advocacy outreach. You will be part of a dynamic, professional, international team in the EU area in Brussels. You will report to the Head of Policy and will work in strong cooperation with our broad membership of engaged companies.

Main responsibilities

  • Proactively monitor and assess EU regulatory developments affecting the smart electrification of the energy system, contribute to shape policy recommendations and lead some advocacy efforts to unlock the activation of demand-side flexibility;
  • Draft position papers, policy recommendations, replies to public consultations, involving the broad smartEn membership;
  • Develop and execute advocacy initiatives for the smartEn Working Groups in your portfolio;  
  • Support members representing smartEn in EU institutional fora, such as Working Groups of the European Commission;
  • Proactively engage with aligned relevant stakeholders and shape joint advocacy initiatives;
  • Contribute to smartEn’s public outreach, notably by representing the Association in institutional fora, stakeholders’ coalitions, conferences and workshops.

Desired skills and experience 

  • A university degree (Master or equivalent) in energy economics, European studies, law, or similar;
  • At least 3 years of relevant professional experience, with a solid knowledge of EU decision-making process and broad network of relevant contacts;
  • Good understanding of the EU energy system, including energy markets, and the critical role of flexible consumers and prosumers in achieving cost-effective decarbonisation;
  • A strong commitment to advancing the clean transition;
  • Capability to translate EU regulatory developments into business impacts for our members;
  • Analytical, curious, pragmatic and flexible attitude. Willingness to deep dive into complex and/or technical policy files;
  • A team-player, collaborative mindset with strong organisational, networking and communication skills;
  • Skilled in drafting;
  • Fluency in written and spoken English required, other European languages are an asset;
  • European citizenship/EU working permit.
