We are seeking a motivated Technical Affairs Intern for a six-month internship to support technical projects of the ECVM product group. As ECVM Technical Affairs Intern, you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in technical projects and working groups in a broad range of topics (sustainability, circularity, life cycle assessment (LCA), chemicals). Plastics Europe is the pan-European association of plastics manufacturers with offices in every major capital of Europe.  For over 100 years, science and innovation has been the DNA that cuts across our industry. Plastics Europe has dedicated plastic product groups, one of them being the European Council of Vinyl Manufacturers (ECVM). ECVM represents 7 leading European producers of PVC. These businesses operate around 40 different plants spread over 23 sites and employ approximately 7,000 people (www.pvc.org). PVC is mostly used in building and construction products, in sport equipment and medical material.

ECVM is also the founding member of VinylPlus®, the voluntary commitment to sustainable development by the European PVC industry (www.vinylplus.eu). This commitment, recently updated with a programme of goals and targets to be achieved by 2030, aims at strengthening the sustainability of PVC products and of the entire industry through a holistic approach including the sustainable use of chemical substances, minimisation of the value chain environmental footprint, safe and quality PVC recycling, building global coalitions and partnering for the UN Sustainable Development Goals. 

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor, analyse, and share briefings on latest technical developments related to plastics and PVC in particular to feed into ongoing projects and share insights with the team
  • Conduct reviews of technical data and scientific literature focusing on key areas linked to PVC and ongoing projects.
  • Support the development of technical reports, presentations, and other communication materials.
  • Assist in the organization and facilitation of technical and project meetings and workshops.
  • Contribute to the implementation of sustainable solutions within the organization.
  • Support various ongoing projects on topics such as:
    • life cycle assessments (LCAs) to evaluate the environmental impact of our members’ products and material.
    • advanced recycling technologies, substance migration/ emission and relevant methodologies
    • Carbon and water footprint calculation along the value-chain
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement sustainable solutions.
  • Assist with various ad-hoc projects and tasks as needed.

Your profile:

  • degree in chemical engineering, environmental engineering, or a related field.
  • Interest in plastics or PVC in particular
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and interpretation.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Passion for sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Mandatory - In possession of an EU passport or work permit granting full access to the employment market in Belgium for the duration of the traineeship.

Responsibilities:

  • Support with researching and monitoring EU policy and legislative developments relevant to the PVC industry.
  • Conduct research on sustainability trends, industry best practices, and stakeholder perceptions to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Review and prepare summaries and analysis of EU policy documents and reports, and draft background material.
  • Support the ECVM Public Affairs and Communication teams to draft materials to communicate ECVM’s initiatives, achievements, and positions on key issues (e.g. position papers, briefings, presentations, press releases, news articles, infographics, etc.).
  • Support the organisation of and attend internal working group meetings. Prepare meeting notes and follow-up action.
  • Prepare presentation material for internal and external meetings and briefing notes;
  • Provide assistance for the organisation of events, projects and stakeholder engagement.
  • Provide general administrative support (database updates, …).

Your profile:

  • University degree preferably in European studies, Law, Political Sciences or similar;
  • Knowledge of and a keen interest in EU policy and decision-making processes as well as a good understanding of the functioning of the European institutions;
  • Strong research skills with the ability to pay close attention to details;
  • Analytical skills and ability to digest complex information into concise and informative briefs;
  • Ability to work autonomously and show initiative;
  • Very good command of English, oral and written. Knowledge of other European languages would be an asset;
  • Sound knowledge of MS Office tools;
  • Previous experience in an EU institution, think-tank, consultancy, or trade organization (asset).

ABOUT THE ROLE:

Are you a young professional eager to support the preparation and organisation of networking and capacity building activities at FIA Region I? The FIA Region I is looking for its next team member.

Key responsibilities

  • Organise and support the preparation of events (before, during and after): the Membership & Events Officer will have a portfolio of events that he/she/they will have full ownership of, and others where he/she/they act in a support function as part of a team.
  • Financial oversight for events, including supplier negotiations, expense tracking, and financial reporting.
  • Assist in the deployment of various capacity building resources for Clubs (digital tools, webinars, training opportunities, mentorings, award programmes, conducting member surveys).
  • Assist with the Region I websites (CMS, content creation, online registrations, etc.).
  • Collaboration with the Communications Manager and the EU Projects Manager as support needs arise.

Who are we looking for?

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, with 1-5 years of professional experience.
  • Excellent organisational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong communication skills, diplomacy, and a member-oriented mindset.
  • Proven networking abilities and relationship-building skills within a member-based organization.
  • Ability to keep calm under pressure with a keen problem-solving aptitude.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm and willingness to acquire new knowledge and skills.
  • Teamplayer, willing to support other departments when needs arise as part of a small office environment.
  • Proficiency in English, and any additional European language considered a plus.
  • Willingness to travel (10-20%).
