GIZ International Services (InS) Brussels is currently looking for an Advisor Business Development Raw Materials (m/f/d) with strong exposure to responsible mining and sustainable raw material supply chains, and a proven track record in designing and winning projects with private-sector clients. The ideal candidate brings a strong commercial mindset, understands industry drivers, and can translate social and environmental challenges into attractive project proposals. In the best case, they have additional experience in securing EU-or EIB-funded contracts.
In our “Responsible Mining Portfolio”, we work on reducing the adverse impacts of mining and processing on local communities and environments while maximizing its positive impact on socio-economic development. We offer projects focussing on community engagement and local development, skills and TVET, biodiversity conservation, water management, land rights, and artisanal mining. These topics leverage GIZ’s broad expertise across varying sectors that have a relevance for mining companies and downstream users. For our clients, we reduce operational and supply chain risks, improve social performance, and increase resilience.
The Advisor Business Development Raw Materials (m/f/d) will be seated in GIZ InS premises in Brussels (Belgium). We offer a full-time unlimited employment contract under Belgian labour law (CP 200.000). The role requires the ability to travel both within Europe and internationally (roughly 20% of working time).
The position is expected to start as soon as possible.
Your main tasks:
The Advisor will drive GIZ positioning, client acquisition, proposal development, and deal closure, with a primary focus on private-sector engagement in responsible mining and raw material supply chains. Your tasks will include:
Positioning
- Map and prioritize target markets, sectors, and client segments with a focus on mining companies, processors, and industrial value chain actors
- Track policy, regulatory, and funding developments relevant to responsible mining and raw materials (e.g. CRMA, CSDDD, Battery Regulation, Global Gateway) and translate them into commercial opportunities for industry clients
- Analyze client sustainability, compliance, operational risk and supply-chain risk drivers to identify entry points for services/projects
- Expand existing personal industry network and position GIZ services through client engagement, industry forums, and conferences related to mining, critical raw materials, and sustainability
- Contribute to the refinement of products and their presentation
- Maintain a live opportunity pipeline and market intelligence database
- Support internal systems for pipeline tracking and knowledge management
Lead generation
- Identify and pursue commercial opportunities, incl. strategic partnerships and long-term engagements
- Proactively engage with prospective and existing clients to understand business needs related to responsible mining, traceability, due diligence, ESG performance, and compliance
- Identify relevant tenders and funding opportunities where they support broader client acquisition strategies
- Manage client relationships across the full sales cycle, from first contact to contract signature
Proposal Development
- Lead the scoping of opportunities by engaging leads and drafting technical concepts
- Lead and coordinate the preparation of technical and commercial proposals together with internal and external experts
- Translate client needs into clear scopes of work, budgets, and implementation plans
- Develop pitch materials, concept notes, and case studies
- Identify, develop, and manage strategic partnerships with consultancies, NGOs, research institutes, and local implementing partners
- Maintain a network of technical experts and delivery partners relevant to responsible mining and raw material supply chains
Deal closure
- Pitch proposals to potential clients
- Negotiate budgets and contracts
Project Implementation
- Support project implementation in a client-facing or technical leadership role (max. 25% of time, depending on qualification)
- Manage and develop client relationships, engage in upselling and upscaling of engagements
Job description:
The ideal candidate combines:
- Strong strategic and analytical capability, with the ability to assess market opportunities and define compelling value propositions
- Well-developed commercial judgment, including experience with pricing, business models, risk allocation, and contract structures
- Excellent stakeholder management and negotiation skills
- A results-oriented, hands-on mindset, with demonstrated success in converting opportunities into signed contracts
- Ability to work independently and proactively, driving business development initiatives from concept through to closure
Required experience and skills:
- Master’s level university degree in a field relevant to responsible mining, such as mining engineering, environmental or natural resource management, supply chain, international development / cooperation, social sciences or any relevant field with a focus on extractive contexts
- 5 years of commercial and business development experience gained on raw material-related subjects in:
- Corporate consulting
- Responsible sourcing / ESG advisory
- Mining, metals, or industrial supply chains
- Development consulting or international cooperation with a close link to the private sector
- 3 years of experience technically leading successful proposal development on raw material-related subjects
- Previous responsibility for opportunity identification, proposal development, and negotiation, with evidence of securing fully funded industry projects
- High degree of familiarity with mining-related risks and risk management approaches in the Global South
- Comfortable working with complex (stakeholder) environments and multi-national teams
- Strong communication, presentation, and writing skills
- Strong analytical skills and a hands-on attitude
- Full fluency in English is an essential requirement
Desirable experience and skills:
- Other language skills, especially in French, German, Spanish, and Portuguese
- Experience operating in or with the Global South
- Work experience in technical roles in e.g. environmental management, artisanal mining, biodiversity, water management, community engagement, traceability or FPIC
- Familiarity with EU and EIB strategies and funding modalities in the sector
- An established professional network within the mining, raw materials, or industrial innovation ecosystem
- Experience operating in international, cross-border, or multi-cultural business environments
Salary and Benefits:
- The gross monthly salary for this position is expected to be in the range of EUR 4500 – 6500 , depending on qualifications and professional experience.
The compensation package includes benefits in accordance with Belgian employment regulations.
