Because CFG is a young organization, part of your role will involve helping to build and document the finance function, including internal financial policies, procedures, and controls. You will work closely with the CEO, grant managers, budget holders, and external partners to ensure effective financial planning, accurate reporting, and continuous improvement in financial processes. You translate financial data into actionable insights, monitor grant expenditure, and support organizational decision-making through timely and relevant reporting.

Core Responsibilities

Financial Oversight & Control

  • Oversee and manage the financial operations of the organization, ensuring sound accounting practices and internal controls.
  • Monitor organizational cash flow, cost allocations, and alignment with strategic financial objectives.
  • Supervise internal finance staff or external service providers and maintain strong internal controls.

Grant Finance & Project Management

  • Monitor the financial performance of grant-funded projects, ensuring expenditures are in line with approved budgets and agreements.
  • Control the correct allocation of costs to grant funding, ensuring compliance and audit readiness.
  • Ensure timely, coherent, and complete financial reporting to grant providers.

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Prepare the annual organizational budget and financial sections of the annual report.
  • Provide regular financial prognosis reports to the board, highlighting key trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Coordinate periodic meetings with budget holders and the Development Officer to ensure alignment, financial awareness, and accountability.
  • Advise and support program directors in budget development and reporting.
  • Support the development and submission of project budgets for new grant proposals.

Financial Analysis & Reporting

  • Prepare internal monitoring reports and variance analyses for the board and management.
  • Analyze financial data from the accounting system (Exact) and provide insights into spending patterns, budget performance, and funding gaps.
  • Proactively report risks and opportunities based on financial analysis and aligned with organizational policies.

Process Improvement & Support

  • Lead the setup and continuous improvement of financial workflows, tools, and procedures across the organization.
  • Develop and document internal financial policies and working procedures to support transparency, compliance, and consistency.
  • Coordinate regular meetings with budget holders and grant managers to ensure shared understanding and accountability.
  • Train and support staff in financial literacy, budgeting, and compliance with internal and grant-related guidelines.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with relevant Dutch and Belgian laws, financial reporting standards, and nonprofit requirements.
  • Coordinate and manage relationships with external auditors.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation for audits and statutory filings.

Desired Profile

  • Proven experience in financial management and control (within a non-profit or grant-funded environment).
  • Strong knowledge of Dutch and/or Belgian accounting and reporting requirements.
  • Hands-on experience with financial software (preferably Exact) and advanced Excel skills.
  • Familiarity with grant compliance, including budget development, project finance, and reporting.
  • Analytical, proactive, and collaborative, with excellent communication skills and a strong sense of responsibility.
