About us

To support the growth of Contexte in Brussels, we’re hiring a Deputy Editor-in-Chief, based in the EU capital.

Our newsroom currently includes around 60 journalists, 20 of them in Brussels. In 2025, our team will grow by 25%.

Since our launch in 2013, Contexte has developed eight daily verticals in French (Tech, Media, Energy, Transport, “Pouvoirs”, Agriculture, Environment, Health) for professionals interested in French public policy. In May 2025, we launched our first English-language vertical, aimed at a European audience, focused on energy policy. A second EU-focused vertical will follow later this year.

Our Brussels office is multicultural, bringing together French and English-speaking journalists working side by side. Editors help adapt content across languages. Our long-term goal is to build a fully integrated European newsroom.

For nearly 12 years, we have covered how public policy is made and how power operates. We help our readers understand how political decisions are taken and who influences them. Our goal is to be useful to those who seek to shape or implement policies.

Our method:

• Understand the substance of complex topics to uncover the politics behind technical issues — and the technical constraints behind political choices.
• Be on the ground, close to sources, to gather high-value information.
• Build a collaborative newsroom where managers lead with trust and support, and journalists work together.

Your Role

You will work with the Editor-in-Chief based in Brussels to help lead and coordinate the work of our Brussels team. You’ll be a point of contact for our journalists and a link to editorial managers based in Paris. You’ll also be part of our senior editorial leadership team.

Your mission: to help make Contexte the go-to source for French and European public policy professionals.

You will report to the Editor-in-Chief in Brussels and support him in daily operations. You will:

• Help lead the Brussels newsroom: set editorial priorities, plan cross-cutting coverage, develop new formats and ensure high editorial quality.
• Support section heads (most of whom are based in Paris) in managing Brussels-based journalists.
• Step in for section heads as needed (daily editing, final reads, team management, etc.).
• Foster editorial collaboration between our Paris and Brussels teams, and between French- and English-language editions.
• Support the development of our English-language coverage.
• Help grow skills and knowledge across the Brussels team.

Required skills

• You’ve managed before, or you’re ready to step into a leadership role. You believe good managers create structure while encouraging autonomy. You know that asking for help is a strength.
• You’re a strong journalist who enjoys editorial thinking, even if writing is no longer your main focus.
• You have a solid understanding of European politics and institutions, and a network within them.
• You’re curious about sectoral policy areas. Expertise in one of our verticals is a plus.
• You know how to handle the pace and deadlines of a daily publication.
• You are fluent in both French and English. You can edit articles in at least one of those languages — ideally both.
• You’re a team player who likes supporting others and coordinating collective work.
• You like helping others to perform at their best.
• You believe collective intelligence is key to a high-functioning newsroom.
• A journalism degree is not required.
