The Role

EuroGeoSurveys (EGS) represents the Geological Survey Organisations of Europe and hosts the Secretariat of the European Technology Platform on Sustainable Mineral Resources (ETP SMR). EGS is seeking an accomplished professional to deliver on a focused portfolio across the European co-funded Raw Materials Partnership for the Green and Digital Transition (RAMP) and the Pan-African Support to Geological Sciences and Technology (PanAfGeo+) project.

This is a substantive delivery and engagement role for someone with a strong grounding in raw materials, research and innovation (R&I), and international cooperation. The post-holder will be expected to work with confidence across policy, science, industry, and funding communities, while personally driving project deliverables.

The post-holder will be the principal day-to-day resource for all EGS and ETP SMR work assigned under RAMP. Within PanAfGeo+, the role focuses on institutional engagement, and support to African expert networks, particularly through applied workshops, and other events in Africa related to raw materials ; technical training activities are primarily covered by other colleagues and partners.

The role has three goals:

• Deliver the EGS/ETP SMR commitments in RAMP, especially partnership widening, international cooperation and networking, actions connecting RAMP with raw materials policy, and coordination of delivery of the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda.
• Strengthen Africa–Europe geoscience partnerships particularly through the relevant PanAfGeo+ institutional and expert network activities, and particularly relating to raw materials.
• Use the overlap between the two programmes, and others, to connect geological surveys, research funders, policy actors, and international raw materials initiatives.

Scope and Responsibilities

RAMP – approximately 50%

• Coordinate and represent the full EGS/ETP SMR RAMP portfolio, ensuring assigned actions, milestones, and deliverables are completed to a high standard.
• Contribute to widening the Partnership by identifying and engaging research funding organisations and strategic partners in Europe and third countries, including through EU raw materials diplomacy and international events.
• Build links with EU and international R&I initiatives, industry platforms, geological survey networks and other relevant organisations; support liaison groups and joint activities.
• Coordinate EGS/ETP SMR contributions, through RAMP, to the Critical Raw Materials Act and related raw materials policy, including policy dialogue, workshops, briefs and revision of the RAMP Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA).
• Support mapping and engagement of the raw materials R&I community to identify gaps, collaboration opportunities, and future funding pathways.
• Coordinate EGS-led activities on UNFC/UNRMS and sustainable resource management in RAMP in coordination with the Geological Survey of Slovenia (GeoZS) and with relevant participating partners.

PanAfGeo+ – approximately 50%

• Lead or support EGS activities on Africa–Europe institutional partnerships, African Expert Networks, governance strengthening, and science–policy dialogue.
• Develop relationships with the European Commission, the Organisation of African Geological Surveys, African Geological Surveys, ministries, research funders, and international organisations, developing practical cooperation opportunities.
• Support workshops and policy-facing outputs, particularly related to raw materials and the role of geoscience in responsible resource development.
• Identify follow-on funding and partnership opportunities and contribute to delivery, monitoring, and reporting of relevant EGS PanAfGeo+ outputs.

Across and beyond both programmes

• Maintain a coordinated stakeholder and opportunity overview and translate relationships into concrete actions, policy-relevant inputs, events, and funding opportunities.
• Prepare clear, accurate written outputs and briefings for technical, policy, and external audiences.
• Work closely with the EGS Secretariat, Expert Groups, member Geological Surveys, ETP SMR community, and relevant project partners.

Whilst workload will likely fluctuate across project based assignments, the hired candidate is also expected to contribute to and support other tasks of the EGS and ETP SMR Secretariats as needed.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must meet every requirement below. Applications that do not clearly demonstrate each requirement will not be considered.

• A Master’s degree or higher in a discipline directly relevant to the raw materials sector, such as economic geology, mining, mineral resources, metallurgy, mineral economics, or a closely related field with a clear raw materials focus.
• Demonstrable expertise in raw materials, including a sound understanding of the sector’s scientific, industrial, and policy context.
• Professional experience and a strong practical understanding of research and innovation in raw materials, including relevant programmes, projects, funding or stakeholder ecosystems, particularly in the EU.
• A proven ability to engage and connect stakeholders across the raw materials sector, such as public authorities, research funders, geological surveys, industry, research organisations, and international networks.
• Demonstrable experience in international engagement or cooperation, including work with partners from more than one country.
• Evidence of successfully delivering complex workstreams, projects, or outputs with multiple stakeholders, deadlines, and limited supervision.
• Excellent spoken and written English, with the ability to communicate credibly with technical, policy, and executive audiences.
• Availability to be based in Brussels and to travel regularly across Europe, Africa, and internationally. Regular in-office presence in Brussels is required. Flexible working arrangements, including some remote work, are supported; however, this position is not suitable for candidates seeking a fully or predominantly remote role.
• An existing legal right to work in Belgium. This must be stated explicitly in the application; EGS will not consider applications that do not include this confirmation. 

Desired Experience and Skills

The following will strengthen an application. Candidates are not expected to meet every desired criterion.

• Professional working proficiency in French. Knowledge of Portuguese is an asset but is not essential.
• Experience in raw materials diplomacy or international minerals/raw materials partnerships.
• Experience working with or alongside the European Commission.
• Experience contributing to EU or national raw materials policy.
• Experience managing international or EU-funded projects, including delivery, partner coordination, monitoring, and reporting.
• Experience in the raw materials industry or in collaboration with industry.
• Experience working with partners, institutions, or projects in Africa, particularly in Africa–Europe cooperation.
