About the European Cocoa Association (ECA)
The European Cocoa Association is a trade association grouping the major companies involved in the cocoa bean trade and processing, warehousing and related logistical activities in Europe. Together, ECA includes 60 companies and overall, we represent 90% of Europe’s cocoa beans grinding, 85% of Europe’s industrial chocolate production and 85% of the world production of cocoa liquor, butter and powder. On behalf of its members, ECA monitors and reports on developments impacting the cocoa sector, at both regulatory and scientific levels.
ECA operates through three main working groups covering:
- “Trade & Logistics” (e.g. rules of origin, trade agreements, customs)
- “Sustainability & Environment” (e.g. CSDDD, CSRD, circularity/waste, energy)
- “Food Safety & Quality” (e.g. pesticides, contaminants)
ECA is also responsible for managing the “Joint Cocoa Research Fund”.
Main responsibilities
- Monitor and report on EU regulatory developments, particularly in the areas of trade, logistics, and environment
- Depending on the Association’s needs, support the organisation of ECA working group meetings and coordinate related activities and initiatives
- Draft position papers and statement on topical working groups’ issues
- Inform ECA members of EU regulatory developments through briefing notes and monthly newsletters
- Engage with EU institutions and Member States authorities (e.g. Commission stakeholder group meetings, Civil Dialogue Groups)
- Liaise and collaborate with key stakeholders across the cocoa sector, as well as European industry associations
Key requirements
- Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. EU Law, European studies); experience in Trade and Environmental policies is an asset
- Previous experience in EU Affairs (ideally around 2 years) gained in EU and/or international institutions, European trade associations or consultancy firms is an advantage
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Additional EU languages (e.g. French, Spanish) are a strong asset
- Ability to prioritise tasks, work independently, and coordinate effectively with colleagues
