ePURE, the unified voice of the European renewable ethanol industry, seeks a new Secretary-General.

ePURE represents the interests of European renewable ethanol producers to the EU institutions, industry stakeholders, the media, academia and the general public. Based in Brussels, ePURE speaks for 35 member companies and associations, with around 50 biorefineries across the EU and UK, accounting for about 85% of EU renewable ethanol production. The organisation, established in 2010, promotes the beneficial uses of ethanol throughout Europe.

About renewable ethanol

Renewable ethanol is produced from agricultural raw materials as well as from waste and residues. Renewable ethanol has important fuel, industrial and food and beverage uses, and its biorefining process delivers much needed co-products in the form of protein and captured CO2. The EU’s ongoing overhaul of energy, environment and transport policies presents an important opportunity for the European renewable ethanol industry to assert its role vital role in reducing emissions from transport, strengthening EU food security and boosting the agricultural economy. ePURE’s Secretary General will lead this effort.

ePURE’s Secretary General reports to the ePURE President and Board and leads a team of 6 professionals based in Brussels. The successful candidate will:

  • Develop and implement advocacy strategies on renewable energy and climate issues, trade and economic affairs, vis-à-vis the European Commission, the European Parliament, Member States and the Brussels-based stakeholders;
  • Provide advice on relevant legislation and adaptation of such legislation by the European institutions;
  • Provide technical support in developing, preparing and implementing ePURE’s view, position and lobbying on relevant EU policies;
  • Represent ePURE in public events and be a high-profile ambassador for the European ethanol industry;
  • Implement the tasks as stipulated in Article 11.1.1 of the ePURE bylaws and all other tasks mentioned in the bylaws that fall under the responsibility of the position of Secretary-General, incl. but not limited to:
    • Serve as a permanent non-voting Secretary of the Board of Directors and minute their meetings. Be responsible to both the Board of Directors and the President and assist the President in the implementation of the President’s mission;
    • Be in charge of the administration of the Association;
      • process applications from applicants who wish to become members;
      • implement the rules and regulations for the conduct of the Association;
      • prepare, manage and minute the General Assemblies meetings, act as Secretary to the General Assembly;
    • Human resources: manage the personnel of the Association and the search for new staff;
    • Be the Treasurer of the Association, responsible for the implementation and management of the budget and the accounts, incl. their annual audit.  Propose the annual budget for the following year.

ePURE Secretary General capabilities

  • Advanced University degree;
  • Strong knowledge of and experience with European Affairs and EU policy and decision-making;
  • Commitment to work in collaborative ways; strong diplomatic skills and the ability to create the best possible conditions for cooperation;
  • Team spirit and leadership ability; 
  • Experience of working in or leading an industry association at EU level;
  • Knowledge of EU renewable energy and climate policies and legislation; knowledge of trade matters an asset;
  • 15 years of work experience of which at least 10 years in Brussels and 5 years of senior management experience;
  • Strong analytical and drafting skills;
  • Strong communication, presentation and interpersonal skills;
  • Motivation to work on politically complex and sensitive issues;
  • Organisational, administrative and budgetary management skills;
  • Computer literacy;
  • Fluent English (both written and spoken); Other languages an advantage.
