BETTER FINANCE is a non-profit international NGO with its office in Brussels acting as an independent financial expertise centre to the direct benefit of European financial services users (individual shareholders, investors, savers, life insurance policyholders, pension fund participants, mortgage borrowers, etc.) and other stakeholders of European financial services who are independent of the financial industry. At present, we count more than forty national and international member and sub-member organisations. In turn, those count more than four million individual members. BETTER FINANCE is looking for a full-time Research and Policy Officer to join the team in Brussels. The successful candidate will specialise in the day-to-day management of policy and research projects covering capital markets, investment funds, life insurance and pensions.
The successful candidate will be required to cooperate closely with the other members of the team, and they may be requested to participate in other advocacy and research initiatives of BETTER FINANCE, depending on their interests and qualifications.   1. Develop and run BETTER FINANCE policy and research projects related to EU financial policymaking, mainly in the area of capital markets, investment funds, life insurance and pensions;
  2. Follow and engage in the evolution of the EU legislative procedures affecting financial services users’ interests in the research area of capital markets, investment funds, life insurance and pensions;
  3. Develop and contribute to presentations, draft research and position papers as well as responses to EU consultations on issues related to capital markets, insurance and pensions (additional policy areas could be identified and agreed upon with the Executive Director);
  4. Contribute to the management of the BETTER FINANCE Annual Work Programmes presented to the European Commission, in particular in the research and policy area;
  5. Help manage the BETTER FINANCE working groups aimed at collecting input and developing consensus between member organisations on EU shareholder and financial policy issues;
  6. Develop contacts with European institutions, research institutes, think tanks, NGOs and universities, as well as other stakeholders active in the European research area as well as policymaking debate;
  7. Participate in conferences, hearings, expert groups and other public events in relation to the research and policy objectives of the Federation, particularly those organised by European institutions;
  8. Manage the BETTER FINANCE’s Scientific Council by supporting the preparation and organisation of annual meetings.
The Policy and Research Officer will report to the Executive Director.
We are looking forward to welcoming an enthusiastic team player willing to take the initiative within the portfolio of assigned tasks. The ideal candidate would meet the following requirements:
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum two years of relevant experience in similar functions (policy, advocacy or research);
  • A university degree in law, economics, European affairs or similar;
  • Commitment to BETTER FINANCE’s mission;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (working language);
  • Knowledge of the general functioning of the EU institutions and their legislative process.
Desirable Qualifications that will be considered an asset
  • Familiarity with and interest in capital markets, investment funds, life insurance and pensions;
  • Experience in drafting publications and carrying out quantitative and qualitative research reports;
  • Understanding of investors’ & savers’ rights issues and financial regulation more broadly;
  • An advanced degree, especially in law or economics,
  • Good IT knowledge, particularly Excel and Word;
