About us

European Patent Office (EPO):

As the patent office for Europe, we are proud to deliver high-quality, efficient services that promote a safer, smarter and more sustainable world.

As set out in our Strategic Plan 2023, we are committed to promoting engaged, transparent and dynamic relations with our internal and external stakeholders (including users, member states, current and former employees, managers and the media).

We believe proactive communication, both external and internal, is key to promoting the excellence of our services worldwide and to building an internal environment where employees feel energised, engaged and committed to our mission and our goals.

What we are looking for

As media relations specialist reporting to the Director Channel Management, you will be expected to use your expertise to enhance the EPO's external communications and, in particular, to generate quality media coverage around patent system-related topics. You will also be responsible for media channel optimisation, and drafting and providing high-quality content to media and key stakeholders in a timely manner. Furthermore, you will develop and implement effective media communications strategies that will maximise media impact around topical campaigns, flagship events and empirical studies related to patents in specific technical fields.

With us you will:

  • provide expert media advice to senior management on media-related matters
  • design and implement specific media campaigns and strategies targeting markets across the world around high-profile events and publications, such as the European Inventor Award and the Patent Index
  • draft clear, concise and effective press releases, case histories, speeches, articles, op-eds and other content, including broadcast media materials, for use by the media (general, specialised and trade) to convey key messages of the organisation
  • draft briefings for the EPO spokesperson and senior management in preparation for media interviews
  • maintain and proactively use contacts with European and international tier 1 media outlets to identify opportunities and secure immediate and long-term media coverage
  • support the press team in identifying media opportunities, generating media coverage and servicing the media
  • organise press conferences, press trips, press events and interviews; liaise with media contacts and monitor and analyse media coverage
  • conduct due diligence and prepare responses to daily media enquiries
  • provide assistance and guidance with EPO social media communications as necessary
  • complete other editorial and media relations tasks linked to daily press channel work, including service-provider management

Apply if you have

  • a minimum of five years’ professional experience as media relations specialist or journalist
  • proven experience in drafting and implementing effective media strategies and creative ideas for generating media coverage
  • significant experience of working with tier 1 media at European and international level as well as a sound understanding of how to achieve media coverage and of agenda setting
  • strong and proven editorial skills in both drafting and editing (AV media experience desirable)
  • sound news and analytic judgement in a variety of areas, including the ability to translate complex topics and jargon into plain language
  • international work experience and a good understanding of public service missions
  • an understanding of IP-related matters (not essential, but would be an advantage)
  • the ability to communicate effectively and confidently both orally and in writing with staff, external stakeholders and the general public
  • excellent written and oral communication skills and very good presentation skills
  • strong media relations experience
  • outstanding teamwork and PR skills

Your qualifications

  • Diploma of completed studies at master's level or – in exceptional cases – equivalent professional experience
  • Excellent knowledge of English (C2) and working knowledge (at least B2) of the other two official languages (French and German). In exceptional cases, excellent knowledge (C2) of English and working knowledge (at least B2) of another. In such cases, the willingness to learn the third language and to reach level B2 would be required
