POSITION SUMMARY

Conservation International (CI) is seeking an experienced HR professional to support our globally diverse organization. Reporting jointly to the Vice President, Global Human Resources and the Senior Vice President, Global Public Partnerships and Managing Director, Europe, this position will guide all human resources matters and drive organizational effectiveness in the areas of staffing, recruitment, development and training, employee relations, and separations for our growing employee base in Europe.

This position requires expertise in employee relations issues, local labor law, compensation and benefits, recruitment, and training and development to support individuals and teams based in Europe across a matrixed organization. The HR Business Partner will support an existing office and staff in Belgium and staff distributed across Europe, while building our presence further in UK, Germany, and France.

The successful candidate will leverage their HR skills, talents, and expertise to implement global solutions and to effectively partner and bring HR into strategic discussions and decision-making processes.  The position requires an individual who has excellent interpersonal and communication skills, cultural adaptability, and a proven ability to collaborate and align with various stakeholders.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a strategic partner to determine workforce needs, identify human resource and competency gaps, and drive the development of a staffing plan to promote staff development and retention
  • Oversee all employment regulation requirements, ensuring that all CI-Europe staff is in full compliance with immigration, labor, working conditions, compensation, benefits, and tax statutes
  • Partner with internal and external legal counsel to support the development and ongoing management of new country representations and employment options
  • Consult with and advise on complex European cross-border business needs including international employment law & compliance and mobility best practices.
  • Negotiate and manage contracts of European employees under an employer of record (Global PEO) as and when needed
  • Advise and assist in recruitment, selection, and orientation processes, ensuring that policy, statutory, and best practice requirements are satisfied. This may include leading select recruitments and participating in selection panels as necessary
  • Manage the introduction of new or revised policies, annual programs, and processes to include delivery of workshops, ensuring that staff and managers are appropriately equipped and supported
  • Support the annual performance management and talent management processes
  • Manage employee relations which may include acting as an impartial mediator in disciplinary procedures and ensuring an equitable and fair treatment that meets all legal and labor regulations and requirements
  • Deliver critical training to ensure employees, managers, and teams have resources, tools, and support development needs. Partnering with the Learning and Development team, conduct development needs assessments
  • Work hand-in-hand with the Learning and Development team to ensure that global learning opportunities are available, aligned, and integrated with talent management processes
  • Manage payrolls and related tasks in different European centers (includes checking payslips, payroll follow-up in accounting, etc.)
  • Organize team retreats and workshops as needed
  • Perform related duties as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The successful candidate would be ideally located in CI’s Brussels, Belgium office
  • The position requires the ability to work alternative hours to meet, consult and advise staff in multiple time zones and work extended hours as needed. This position will include a hybrid and flexible work schedule when offices are safely able to re-open
  • The successful individual must have the ability to travel as needed, not to exceed 10% of the time, when safe and offices re-open.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • A Bachelor’s degree and 7 or more years of Human Resources experience in an international setting or any similar combination of education and experience
  • Working knowledge of multiple human resources disciplines including staffing, workforce planning, recruiting, employee relations, compensation practices, performance management, and relevant employment laws in Europe
  • Experience in managing globally mobile employees including immigration, taxation, and relocation in countries of focus
  • Proven success in managing cross-team projects, engaging with and influencing peers to drive to conclusion and mutual success
  • Persuasive and engaging communication, presentation, training, and facilitation skills to clearly convey objectives to diverse audiences and stakeholders
  • Ability to consult and partner with internal clients across various teams and countries
  • Experience in solving complex issues through analysis, defining a clear way forward, and ensuring buy-in
  • Ability to make quick decisions, to be diligent with responses, and work to find solution-driven conclusions, and work collaboratively across many audiences  
  • Highly organized and self-directed with a proven ability to set priorities and meet critical priorities
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities and under minimal supervision
  • Excellent and persuasive oral and written communications skills; professionally assertive with ability to influence without formal authority and capable of managing conflict and conflicting views
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and ability to learning and successfully navigate in collaboration tools such as SharePoint.

Preferred

  • Fluency in French and German desired
  • SPHR, GPHR, CIPD, or other HR professional certifications
  • Experience working with an Employee of Record (EOR) or Global PEO
  • Experience working in an international non-profit organization.
