A.I.S.E. is the European trade association representing the detergents and maintenance products industry and is based in Brussels.  We are recruiting a Scientific & Regulatory Affairs Manager to join our dynamic and multicultural team in Brussels. 

You will report directly to the Scientific & Regulatory Affairs Director and assist the association in developing and managing A.I.S.E.’s work programme on REACH, air quality, hazardous substance management and ingredient communication.

Your responsibilities 

You will have the opportunity to represent the views of leading European industries subject to chemicals legislation.  You will be driving, coordinating and managing the daily activities related to some key EU Regulations on chemicals safety, with a focus primarily on REACH.  With the support of industry experts, you will also provide technical input and advice to A.I.S.E.’s product stewardship initiatives on Indoor Air Quality, as well as monitoring and supporting developments affecting key ingredients such as enzymes.

These activities will involve collecting, evaluating and summarising scientific and regulatory information and data, leading projects and project teams, developing guidance and industry positions and seeking consensus.  In addition to communicating with and providing advice to our members, you will also interact frequently with external stakeholders, such as the European institutions, European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), other industry associations and our network of National Associations. 

Your main activities

1. REACH

  • Assist the members with the implementation of the REACH Regulation, focusing in particular on Downstream User duties such as supply chain communication.
  • Actively contribute to technical advocacy on the revision of REACH, providing scientific and sector-specific input on topics such as Mixture Assessment Factor and polymers. 
  • Monitor REACH developments and substance-specific regulatory activities (e.g. restrictions), develop position papers and consultation inputs and advocate them. 
  • Represent A.I.S.E. externally, at Competent Authorities’ meetings and in conferences. 
  • Organise and run working groups/task forces on REACH-related topics within A.I.S.E. 

2. (Indoor) Air Quality / VOC

  • Coordinate industry activities related to A.I.S.E.’s Product Stewardship Programme on Air Fresheners and emissions measurements. 
  • Provide technical input to develop industry strategy and positions.
  • Write guidance documents, scientific and/or briefing papers and monitor the scientific/ regulatory debate in the EU, e.g. under the Zero Pollution Action Plan.
  • Lead the Air Quality/VOC Working Group and coordinate with partner industries (e.g. European Candle Manufacturers Association). 
  • Engage with other industry sectors (e.g. ESIG, IFRA) on other topics related to VOC use in detergents and maintenance products.

3. Substance/ingredient management

  • Organise and run the A.I.S.E./ AMFEP Enzymes Safety Working Group and ensure coordination with the enzyme suppliers’ sector. 
  • Coordinate activities on global guidance for safe use of enzymes, including engagement with US associations (ACI, HCPA).
  • Promote the work of A.I.S.E. on safe use of enzymes (www.aise.eu/enzymes) and feed into other regulatory activities affecting this class of ingredient.
  • Support A.I.S.E. in the creation and update of common industry messaging for ingredients used in the sector. 

Your profile

  • A university degree in chemistry, life/environmental sciences, toxicology or other relevant discipline
  • Experience of two to three years in a similar field 
  • Experience of coordinating projects or teamwork 
  • Familiarity with chemicals legislation and chemical safety topics, in particular REACH but preferably also others e.g. Detergents Regulation, Biocidal Products Regulation, CLP 
  • Good knowledge of the chemical industry sector and of the European Institutions 
  • Good writing and communication skills with an excellent command of English, including ability to explain complex scientific issues in layman language 
  • Good organisational skills and ability to handle several dossiers in parallel 
  • Team player with an open and international mindset 
  • Independent worker with initiative, flexible and open to feedback 
  • Working methods based on conceptual thinking and scientific rigour 
  • Experience of trade association work is a plus.
