Healthy Buildings and Energy Poverty Policy Officer (Maternity Cover)

March – September 2019 (7 months)

The Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL) is looking for an enthusiastic policy officer to cover communications and advocacy activities on healthy buildings and energy poverty. HEAL’s healthy buildings activities aim to ensure that buildings in Europe are both health-promoting and climate-friendly, working with a range of health stakeholders, city authorities and the public. We currently focus on the implementation of key legislation for healthy buildings, and specific settings for vulnerable groups, especially schools.

HEAL is a leading European not-for-profit organisation addressing how the environment affects health in the European Union. Our alliance brings together over 75 member organisations, representing health professionals, not-for-profit health insurers, doctors, nurses, cancer and asthma groups, citizens, women's groups, youth groups, environmental NGOs, scientists and public health institutes. Members include international and Europe-wide organisations, as well as national and local groups. (website: www.env-health.org).

What we are looking for:

HEAL is seeking a policy officer to join our climate and cities team at the Brussels Secretariat, who will help us continue our successful advocacy and communications activities. We are looking for a creative, intelligent, organized and communications-savvy individual. The successful candidate should be committed to improving health through the implementation of environmental policies and engaging the public and health professionals. The policy officer will report to HEAL’s policy coordinator.

Candidate profile:

  • University degree and minimum 1 year relevant work experience
  • Clear understanding of EU and national policy processes on buildings, energy efficiency and health
  • Experience in advocacy and communications at national, EU or global level
  • Fluent written and spoken English, second EU language – French, German – highly desirable

Responsibilities include:

  • Advocacy and communications activities on advancing healthy and energy efficient building renovations and activities on tackling energy poverty in key EU member states including Germany, France, Poland, Bulgaria, Spain
  • Gathering and sharing evidence and new studies on healthy buildings and translating health, scientific, economic and policy evidence
  • Promoting HEAL’s work on schools as healthy buildings, including through online materials such as statements, media releases and social media infographics
  • Engaging the health sector and strengthen their policy and communications engagement on healthy buildings, energy efficiency and energy poverty, e.g. through the facilitation of statements, articles, social media etc., regular postings on listserve
  • Organising project and capacity building meetings with health and medical professionals, partner organisations Information and application
