Cefic, the European Chemical Industry Council, is both the forum and voice of the European chemical industry. It aims to maintain and develop a prosperous chemical industry in Europe by promoting the best possible economic, social and environmental conditions to bring benefits to society.

The chemical industry is a € 500+ billion industry, providing over 1 million direct jobs and nearly 2.5 million indirect jobs in Europe. The chemical industry is the “Industry of Things”. The industry's products are essential to 95% of everything manufactured: hygiene, health, mobility, construction, computers and electronics all rely on the chemical industry. The sector is also critical to meeting future needs, such as developing energy sources or managing scarce resources. The chemical industry is essential for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Cefic is located in Brussels to represent the industry vis-à-vis EU institutions and involve member federations and companies in European advocacy. We employ more than 150 people.

For its Specialty Chemicals department, in one of its major Sector Groups, Cefic is looking for a (m/f):

Sector Group Manager - European Biocidal Product Forum (EBPF)

Mission of the role:

In charge of several working groups and projects of the EBPF Sector Group, the right candidate will act as a project manager, represent EBPF in various EU bodies and/or ECHA committees and provide timely delivery of required results. You will report to the Executive Director of the Specialty Chemicals department.

Are you inspired by these responsibilities? You will:

  • Organise and lead the meetings together with chair and vice-chair/draft minutes of various EBPF working groups, composed of representatives from the chemical industry
  • Coordinate and manage projects in response to key issues in the area of biocidal products. This includes:
    • Develop position papers, based on industry comments, for presentation at Authority discussions
    • Make the link between the legal / regulatory requirements and the scientific aspects (e.g. Environmental Exposure, Human Health, Human Exposure)
    • Be involved in guidance development with ECHA – European Chemical Agency and OECD
    • Report back to Industry members on key topics including early warning on upcoming issues
    • Develop, agree and implement with the member companies a strategy to deal with these issues (regulatory, scientific or other)
  • Have regular contacts with the EU and Member State authorities
  • Liaise with value chain associations where appropriate
  • Be a source of specialist advice and information about the sector

Can you make the difference?

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated professional who demonstrates the following experience and competencies:

  • Academic background: preferably MA or MSc in Science
  • Experience working at European/international level on regulatory and scientific issues, preferably in the chemical industry and/or with a similar member association
  • Good knowledge of the Biocidal Products Regulation is highly desired, knowledge of REACH/CLP is an asset
  • Analytical thinker
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Full professional proficiency in English and at least one other European language; additional languages are a definite asset
  • Motivation to travel regularly (about 35 %)
  • Strong communication skills
  • Excellent oral presentation skills, with the ability to speak clearly and concisely in front of a group; deliver well-organised, enthusiastic and convincing presentations and adapt style and language to audience
  • Ability to write clear and concise correspondence translating communications from authorities into actions for the members
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to negotiate and solve conflicts
