We are currently seeking a Scientific Programme Director

Someone to lead scientific teams and uphold the quality of all deliverables, while building great external relationships and troubleshooting all scientific and operational issues


ILSI Europe brings together scientists from industry, academia and the public sector to deliver science of the highest quality and integrity in the areas of food safety, nutrition, consumer behaviour and sustainability.

ILSI Europe is recognised for the quality of its scientific output and reached an h-index of 85 in 2017.

ILSI Europe has 61 member companies (most of them are worldwide leaders in their field: Danone, Nestlé, Mars, BASF, Merck, Barilla, Cargill, etc.) and an annual budget of m€.2.6.

ILSI Europe activities are coordinated by a staff of 19. ILSI Europe manages an ecosystem of 22 task forces and 50+ expert groups that gather more than 500 external collaborating scientists. It organises every year 7 workshops and 2 international symposia.


ILSI Europe is located in Brussels.


The Scientific Programme Director is accountable for leading the scientific activities of ILSI Europe. He/she is responsible for the overall scientific performance of ILSI Europe as well as for the respect of the scientific integrity & code of ethics.

He/she is in charge of recommending scientific strategy and manages scientific relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.

He/she ensures the widest dissemination of the scientific output to the most suitable audience in collaboration with the Communication Manager.

Reporting & supervisory relationships

  • Reports to the Executive & Scientific Director of ILSI Europe
  • Manages hierarchically a team of 9: 2 senior scientific project managers and 7 scientific project managers
  • Manages, with the support of his/her team, 22 task forces with 500+ external collaborating scientists


  • Manages ILSI Europe scientific team and activities
    1. Executes ILSI Europe scientific programme as validated by the Scientific Advisory Committee & the Board of Directors
    2. Manages scientific team
  • Recommends scientific strategy and manages relationships with key stakeholders
    1. Ensures ILSI Europe awareness of current trends within the industry
    2. Liaises with key stakeholders: scientists involved into the Task Forces, Senior R&D officers within member companies, ILSI Global and other ILSI entities
    3. Identifies opportunities
    4. Recommends scientific strategy
  • Ensures the widest dissemination of the scientific output to the most suitable audience
    1. Recommends scientific content for conferences/workshops & symposia organised by ILSI Europe as well as for publications
    2. Represents ILSI Europe during external conferences and symposia

Scientific expertise

  • PhD degree, preferably in the fields of food safety, nutrition or life sciences
  • Excellent track record in fundamental research
  • Strong general scientific overview of research, in particular in nutrition and/or food safety fields
  • Proven interest in interdisciplinary approaches

Experience required

  • 15 years+ of experience in R&D departments / Research centres in international organisations
  • Managed international teams for more than 10 years
  • Published in peer reviewed journals
  • Developed & managed relationships with key stakeholders
  • Managed budgets

  • Able to travel throughout Europe 20 to 30% of the time
  • European citizenship / EU working permit
