The Salvation Army EU Affairs Office is based in Brussels city centre and represents the international Salvation Army Europe zone as part of the worldwide Salvation Army. The goal of the EU Affairs Office is to provide an EU-level platform for The Salvation Army to relate to the EU and European issues and to enable the Army to engage in advocacy, representing the organization as well as the people we serve.

The BuildERS project is an EU funded project (Horizon2020) that focuses on the ability of vulnerable individuals and people groups to recover from disasters. The Salvation Army EU Affairs office is one of 17 international partners in this project. Our partnership will be used to bring the needs of disadvantaged social groups and/or entire communities to the attention of national and European civil protection policy makers. The Salvation Army in several European countries will interview the people that they serve in their daily work: Roma people, impoverished elderly adults, families in poverty, homeless individuals, undocumented migrants, survivors of human trafficking, and people in rehabilitation from substance abuse. 

The Salvation Army EU Affairs Office is currently recruiting a Project Coordinator.  The position is for one year (with a possibility to extend) and the coordinator will be based in Brussels.

The job

Your main responsibility will be coordinating the work of The Salvation Army staff and volunteers as they conduct interviews with the most vulnerable in several European countries. You will provide information and support and liaise between our project partners and The Salvation Army. The position entails both internal and external communication tasks, as well as administrative duties. 

More specifically you will be responsible for:

  • Developing strong communication channels with the network of TSA staff and volunteers participating in the project. 
  • Ensuring that staff and volunteers have the necessary tools and information to conduct interviews and meet project deadlines.
  • Engaging and motivating TSA staff and volunteers in their work towards the project.
  • Supporting the Project Manager in contributing to reports.
  • Enforcing project specific rules amongst volunteers and local staff.
  • Monitoring workflow and provide continuous support and information to volunteers and local staff.
  • Providing on-site support to staff and volunteers where necessary.
  • General administrative duties.

Person specification/Skills/experience

  • Solid organisational skills, including multitasking and time-management
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Some experience in the NGO sector is helpful in particular experience in the humanitarian, social or charitable sector. Previous experience working with the Salvation Army is an asset.
  • Strong inter-personal skills, capacity to relate to different audience and to adapt to situations working with colleagues in different countries.
  • Good leadership skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Excellent level of English both oral and written; other European languages are an asset.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally.
  • Computer literacy.
  • The post holder should be in sympathy with The Salvation Army’s mission statement and comfortable with the work for a faith based organisation led by Christian values.

The position is for one year, which can possibly be extended.  A competitive salary is offered, which will be discussed depending on the experience of the person.
