Cefic, the European Chemical Industry Council, is both the forum and voice of the European chemical industry. It aims to maintain and develop a prosperous chemical industry in Europe by promoting the best possible economic, social and environmental conditions to bring benefits to society.
The chemical industry is a € 500+ billion industry, providing over 1 million direct jobs and nearly 2.5 million indirect jobs in Europe. The chemical industry is the “Industry of Things”. The industry's products are essential to 95% of everything manufactured: hygiene, health, mobility, construction, computers and electronics all rely on the chemical industry. The sector is also critical to meeting future needs, such as developing energy sources or managing scarce resources. The chemical industry is essential for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Cefic is located in Brussels to represent the industry vis-à-vis EU institutions and involve member federations and companies in European advocacy.  We employ more than 150 people.
For its Product Stewardship department, Cefic is looking for a (m/f):  Product Stewardship Manager (Microplastics and Polymers)
Mission of the role:
You will be responsible for the Microplastics and Polymers file. This is an important file for the European Chemical Industry given the increased public concerns about the use and disposal of plastic. Notably, polymers account for about 20% of the chemical industry’s sales, the vast majority of which is converted into plastic. When regulating plastics, the authorities need to ensure that the environment is properly protected now, and for future generations, whilst allowing industry to produce plastic materials for the benefit of society.  As PS Manager Microplastics and Polymers, you will be responsible for ensuring that industry’s knowledge and experience in this field is fully taken into account by the authorities, with the purpose of striking the right balance between the benefits provided by plastics and the protection of the environment.  You will report to the Product Stewardship Director.
Are you inspired by these responsibilities? You will:
  • Contribute to and co-ordinate the development of the Cefic positions on the regulation of intentionally produced Microplastics
  • Manage the Microplastics Issue Team and supporting Networks of Experts
  • Following the (2017) REACH Review, review and update the Cefic positions on polymers
  • Present Cefic positions on these topics to authorities and at conferences/workshops attended by policy-makers
  • Support industry’s activities concerning intentionally produced Microplastics in the International Council of Chemical Associations if needed (ICCA, global level)
  • Ensure timely communication and information flow to the relevant stakeholders
Can you make the difference? The successful candidate will be an experienced professional who demonstrates the following experience and competencies:
  • Masters degree in chemistry, chemical engineering or similar
  • At least 5 years of experience within the chemical industry or authorities; with knowledge of regulatory affairs
  • In depth knowledge of EU policy on Chemicals, especially REACH, familiarity with CLP
  • Proven experience in polymer technology; technical knowledge of the polymer industry and plastic production
  • Strong analytical and organisation skills
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and networking skills. Capacity to communicate with people from different technical backgrounds
  • Ability to lead discussions and build consensus
  • Excellent English (written and spoken)
Required personal qualities:
  • Able to work to tight deadlines; agility to adapt to changing circumstances; proactivity
  • Eager to learn and develop new skills and to face new challenges
  • Willingness to travel. Some travel is required within Europe (notably, Helsinki and Paris); occasional international travel may be required
