Who we are:

The Coalition for Fair Fisheries Arrangements is a platform of European and African-based organizations that raises awareness about the impacts of the EU-Africa fisheries arrangements on African artisanal fishing communities. With a part of the team based in Brussels, we advocate at European institution level so that the voice of artisanal fishing communities in third countries is heard.

What we offer:

The UN General Assembly declared 2022 the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA). In preparation of this Year, CFFA and their partners will aim at giving increased visibility to African artisanal fisheries in general and globally, but also to enable understanding of the issues at stake, the innovations in the sector and to unlock/trigger actions to support it. We also aim at encouraging dialogue between stakeholders and ensuring that the voices of men and women working in African fisheries are heard.

To support the team, CFFA is seeking for an intern to support the Communications and Advocacy in Brussels. This role has been created as an opportunity for the intern to gain experience with working with a wide and global network of civil society organisations, and in particular to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of EU decision-making on international oceans governance, especially on external fisheries issues.

In this role, the successful candidate will have an opportunity to further his/her knowledge of the European institutions (DG MARE, INTPA, TRADE, PECH/ENVI/DEVE committees, EESC) that work in the fisheries and fisheries policy related sector. He/she will assist the communications and advocacy staff to ensure the visibility of African artisanal fisheries before and during IYAFA.

Note: This is a part-time opportunity as the whole of the team is on a part-time contract. If the successful candidate is not Brussels-based, there is the possibility to work remotely. A work plan, as well as a learning and development plan, depending on the intern’s background and interests, will be agreed with the intern during the induction period.

What we are looking for:

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, including the ability to communicate to people of different cultural backgrounds;
  • Educated to Master’s degree level (Law, Political Science, International relations, Communications, Marine biology…);
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and French;
  • A high level of computer literacy; experience using multimedia software (please specify in the application); strong technical aptitude in MS Office;
  • Enthusiastic, proactive with a ‘can do’ attitude;
  • Organised, with an ability to meet deadlines and high standards of quality;
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Ability to manage own workload, with some supervision;
  • A demonstrable interest in fisheries and/or human rights of developing coastal communities

How and where to apply:

Please attach a copy of your CV (max. 2 pages) and a 1-page motivation letter to secretariat@cffacape.org

Please specify in your application whether you would require a tripartite internship agreement or you are seeking another type of convention.
