The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) is currently looking for suitable candidates to fill a Policy Advisor position for its Representation in Brussels.

About the GIZ Representation:The mission of the GIZ Representation in Brussels is to position the enterprise in the EU context and to ensure the coherence of its actions and visibility in Brussels. To fulfil this, our activities range from interest representation vis-à-vis the EU institutions and other partners, to radar function and observation of the EU policy framework, and also include advisory services to our Management Board and other GIZ organisational units.

Role purpose: The selected candidate will be part of a small and dynamic team of policy advisors, responsible for, among others, the monitoring and analysis of EU policies around international cooperation for sustainable development, as well as related advisory services. He/she will play an active role in enhancing the positioning of GIZ in the Brussels context, as well as in liaising with relevant departments within the company.

Main responsibilities

Policy analysis and advice: monitor EU policy developments and produce analyses relevant for the enterprise in the following areas of interest for GIZ:

  • involvement of private sector in sustainable development
  • the EU External Investment Plan (EIP) and related initiatives
  • impact investment
  • private sector development
  • digitalization for development

Partnership building and contact management: maintain and further develop partnerships with EU institutions and other relevant stakeholders (German Permanent Representation to the EU, private sector actors, other EU Member States implementing organisations - including in the framework of the Practitioners’ Network, think tanks, etc.) in the areas mentioned above;

Coordination of delegation visits: advising and coordination GIZ high level delegations to Brussels;

Other activities: Actively contribute to the core activities of the Representation, including organisation of events, coordination function with the Council of the EU, preparation of briefing materials, etc.

Person specification

Required qualifications

  • Master’s degree in economics, law, political science or related area;
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience at the international level, including experience of working with / within the EU institutions in institutional / political affairs or development cooperation;
  • Excellent knowledge of the EU external action policies and instruments;
  • Familiarity with the topics of development finance, impact investment, blending;
  • Knowledge of relevant EU financial instruments for external action and of the External Investment Plan (EIP);
  • Excellent levels of written and spoken German & English;
  • Commitment to GIZ mission and values.
  • Valid work permit for Belgium

Additional qualifications

  • Knowledge of development finance institutions/multilateral development banks;
  • Professional experience at field level with a development organization or with an enterprise;
  • Experience in public affairs and contact management in the EU context;
  • Other EU languages are an asset.
