Cefic, the European Chemical Industry Council, is both the forum and voice of the European chemical industry. It aims to maintain and develop a prosperous chemical industry in Europe by promoting the best possible economic, social and environmental conditions to bring benefits to society.  

The chemical industry is a € 500+ billion industry, providing over 1 million direct jobs and nearly 2.5 million indirect jobs in Europe. The chemical industry is the “Industry of Things”. The industry's products are essential to 95% of everything manufactured: hygiene, health, mobility, construction, computers and electronics all rely on the chemical industry. The sector is also critical to meeting future needs, such as developing energy sources or managing scarce resources. The chemical industry is essential for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals.  

Cefic is located in Brussels to represent the industry vis‐à‐vis EU institutions and involve member federations and companies in European advocacy.  We employ more than 160 people. 

For its HSSE, Responsible Care & Supply Chain department, Cefic is looking for a (m/f):

Manager

Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE)

Mission:

In this role, you will be leading Cefic’s lobby actions related to European Health, Safety, Security and Environmental policies & regulations. Beside this, you will be responsible for the chemical’s industry voluntary programme on HSE excellence. With the support of three Cefic Experts, members-staffed issue teams and networks of expert (working groups), you are responsible for identifying key HSSE policy and regulatory developments and for developing and steering an advocacy strategy and program to address these developments, whilst considering legal, political and company boundaries. You will report to the Executive Director HSSE, Responsible Care and Supply Chain.

You will

  • Develop advocacy strategy and steer advocacy plans in the field of Health, Safety, Security and Environmental policies & regulations relevant to the European chemicals industry
  • Steer and support the Cefic HSSE Issue Teams and expert groups
  • Advise the Executive Director and provide input to the Cefic Leadership Team and Program Councils
  • Coach the HSSE and Responsible Care team into being the best it can be
  • Represent Cefic and the European Chemical industry in Expert Committees, and in the relevant external conferences and workshops attended by policy‐makers; contribute to the discussions with authorities representing the interests of the European Chemical Industry
  • Liaise with other industry associations and stakeholders, including NGO’s and trade unions
  • Be an internal focal point to early alert and coordinate actions on HSSE matters; support and guide Specialty Chemicals member groups on HSSE related topics; collaborate with experts across Cefic departments

Can you make the difference?  

The successful candidate will be an experienced professional who demonstrates the following experience and competencies:

  • Master degree in chemistry, chemical engineering or similar
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience within the chemical industry or another European association
  • Strong proven understanding of EU environment, occupational health legislation and policies
  • Experience in HSSE regulatory affairs is a must; knowledge of EU chemicals legislation (REACH) is a definite asset
  • In-depth understanding of the functioning of European and international institutions and experience with advocacy at international level
  • Excellent communication and (re)presentation skills
  • Strong project manager results oriented and able to work under pressure and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Excellent English (written and spoken)

  • Good leadership skills and ability to develop consensus of diverging opinions
  • Strategic and analytical thinker with service and customer orientation
  • Eager to learn and develop new skills
    • Willing to travel occasionally across Europe and exceptionally abroad
    • Prepared to live in Belgium (Brussels)
