This exciting opportunity is for a mid-level to experienced lawyer with litigation experience to become part of the team working on marine conservation issues, and contributing to ClientEarth’s efforts to use the law to achieve meaningful protection of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and foster the recovery of marine biodiversity in Europe.
There will be a strong emphasis on working with partner NGOs and making strategic legal interventions (e.g. complaints and court cases) to protect marine wildlife and habitats at national and EU levels. The initial focus is anticipated to be building legally robust arguments to prevent damaging fishing activities in MPAs in French, Portuguese and Irish waters (particularly inshore MPAs) and in the North Sea (offshore MPAs). The Lawyer will also analyse complex legal questions and policy scenarios and produce high-quality outputs, including speaking on behalf of ClientEarth to key decision makers.
The role is based in ClientEarth’s Brussels office and we are keen for somebody to start in early March 2019.
Role requirements
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record in law (preferably in a EU Member State or at EU level), and will be ready to contribute to strategic legal thinking, advocacy and creative problem solving in a public interest law setting. You will also have some experience with litigation, good project management skills and sound knowledge of EU Environmental Law, particularly the Birds and Habitats Directives.
More generally, you are a highly organised, efficient worker able to handle a number of competing priorities, an excellent communicator in diverse settings, with good interpersonal and relationship building skills. Excellent written and verbal skills in English are essential.
