Internship in the Africa and Middle East Department
Job Description
The TI Secretariat in Berlin is seeking a highly motivated, pro-active intern to support its work to support its work in the Africa and the Middle East Department (Sub-Saharan Africa team).
Transparency International (TI) is the leading global non-governmental and not-for-profit organisation devoted to combating corruption. Its mission is to bring about change towards a world free of corruption. TI currently has more than 90 National Chapters across the world, and its International Secretariat is based in Berlin, Germany.
TI does not investigate or expose individual cases of corruption but advocates for reform by focusing on systemic improvement and by building coalitions with other anti-corruption stakeholders, including governments, the private sector and civil society organisations.
Description of Internship
Main function: Assisting the Sub-Saharan Africa team in their work
Starting Date: 10 June 2008
Duration: Three to six months (full time)
Remuneration: EUR 400 per month, if the internship is not sponsored by a third party
Location: Berlin, Germany
Key responsibilities:
- Assisting with implementation of a number of projects, including regional programmes on transparency in basic service delivery in Africa; advocacy and legal advice centres in the Africa/Middle East region; and a planned programme on political corruption;
- Assisting with preparations for participation of delegates from National Chapters to attend a series of programme-related workshops in Africa (flight and hotel bookings, and other logistical issues);
- Liaising with contact groups and National Chapters on these and other issues;
- Assisting with preparation of TI presentations to external interlocutors;
- Monitoring international media for issues of interest to TI;
- Other various administrative tasks and support to the Africa/Middle East Department.
Knowledge, experience and skills:
- Strong academic background in political science / international relations (other relevant fields will be considered)
- Adaptable and flexible personality, able to handle multiple tasks and workloads;
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and effective communication abilities;
- Excellent knowledge of English or French (written and spoken) and at least very good knowledge of the other language;
- Good knowledge of MS Office applications including proven experience of working with Excel (required);
- Some knowledge of, and considerable interest in, the work of TI and the field of anti-corruption (required);
- Knowledge of, or proven interest in, the Africa and Middle East region (required);
- Some prior office experience very desirable;

Due to the short notice of this announcement, EU / EEC nationals and those with a valid work permit for Germany are particularly encouraged to apply.
Interns must obtain their own health insurance before starting the internship, as well as register as residents in Germany for tax reasons. Students at German universities should submit documents verifying their student status.
