Purpose of the Role:
The selected candidate will work on different projects relating to the challenges the EU oil refining industry is facing for the coming decades; this is done through modelling, data analysis and economics of EU refineries. A core project will be to lead an in-depth and confidential data collection project, investigating every single EU oil refinery (steps being: analyse the existing, build up, propose/convince, send questionnaires, collect responses, analyse, and communicate). Another project may be to develop a generic EU refining margin indicator (or range of indicators) that would be the result of a transparent calculation and would be used as a reference for the EU refining industry.
The internship would include involvement in other interesting projects which will depend on the expertise and skills of the future candidate (such as modelling refinery operation using the Concawe EU refining LP model, evaluating the economic impacts of EU legislation affecting the refining industry, refined products and alternative fuels).
Background Information
Concawe represents the interests of 41 Companies operating petroleum refineries in the EU. Members account for almost 100% of EU petroleum refining capacity and more than 75% of EU motor fuel retail.
The association aims to promote economically and environmentally sustainable refining, supply and use of petroleum products in the EU, by providing input and expert scientific advice to the EU Institutions, Member State Governments, member companies, and the wider community, thus contributing in a constructive and proactive way to the development and implementation of EU policies and regulations.
General responsibilities:
  • Support the Refinery Technology (RT) Science Executive in his tasks and projects
  • Investigate issues affecting the oil refining industry
Specific responsibilities:
  • Gather technical information, technical scientific reports, scientific publications build up and lead project to develop a database collection project and a generic margin indicator
  • Liaise with consultants working on Concawe projects and provide data and technical input as required
  • Keep the Concawe EU refining capacity database up-to-date 
  • Set up user-friendly Excel formats for Concawe tools such as EU Refining Margin Indicators and EU refining capacities
  • Discuss and validate model results with other stakeholders (e.g. Member Companies)

Education & Experience
  • Engineering degree (refining technics/economics is a plus)
  • Previous exposure to similar role is an asset

  • Excellent computer skills (Word, PowerPoint, Excel…)
The traineeship is remunerated.
