Job Description

The European Mortgage Federation (EMF) is the voice of the European mortgage industry (residential & commercial) at the European and international levels, and it is currently seeking a Head of Legal Affairs to join the legal department of its Brussels-based Secretariat.

The EMF is the key talking partner of the European Commission, the European Parliament and the European Central Bank on all retail and funding issues relating to the European mortgage sector.


Key responsibilities for this position
will include the coordination of and attendance at internal and external meetings, the study, analysis and follow-up of regulatory initiatives by the European Institutions and EU authorities that may impact on European mortgage markets, and contribution to the Federation’s general programme of work.


Job description:

  • Rapporteur to the Federation’s Legal Affairs Committee, which involves preparing meetings, working documents, agendas and briefings, and participation in meetings
     
  • Responsibility for analysing legal developments at national and European levels, and advising on policy initiatives affecting European mortgage lenders and market participants
     
  • Liaising with EMF members and representatives of the European Institutions as well as other multi-lateral bodies with interests in housing finance
     
  • Coordinating surveys, studies and analysis of Europe’s mortgage credit legislation as well as preparing political position papers to support the EMF’s lobbying objectives


Your profile:

  • Advanced university degree with strong legal content (ideally a qualified lawyer)
  • Excellent written and spoken English (mother tongue or equivalent)
  • Advanced knowledge of the European Institutions and their functioning
  • Minimum of five years’ relevant professional experience
  • Excellent analytical, drafting and presentation skills
  • Strong IT (Microsoft Office) skills
  • A self-starter able to work on your own initiative and as part of a wider team
  • A background in the retail financial services sector or a European trade association would be a distinct asset
  • Other language skills and French in particular would also be an asset
