The French Union of Electricity (Union Française de l’Electricité - UFE), the trade federation of French electricity companies, is recruiting a Head of European and International Affairs.

The organisation

UFE represents employers in the electricity industry and defends the interests of its members, from generators, to transmission and distribution system operators, electricity and energy efficiency suppliers as well as aggregators, in the economic, industrial and social fields. It gathers, directly or indirectly, more than 500 companies representing more than 200.000 employees and accounting for a total revenue of more than €40 billion. Its members are EDF, ELE, ENEDIS, ENERGY POOL, ENGIE, ENGIE INEO, ENGIE COFELY, ENI, France Hydro-Electricité (FHE), IDEX, RTE, Syndicat des Energies Renouvelables (SER), Total-Direct Energie, UNELEG, Voies Navigables de France.

UFE is also a member of the European association Eurelectric, the European Platform for Electromobility and the Market Parties Platform. As representative of the French electricity branch, UFE advocates in France and in Europe for a long-term vision for the sector articulated around a low-carbon strategy, the necessity to ensure security of supply, the socio-economic transformations at stake and the need to boost European industry.

UFE’s Brussels Office is the point of contact of the French electricity sector with European institutions. Its goal is to defend the interests of the French sector at European level, thanks to a constant dialogue with European policy makers, interest groups, civil society representatives and think tanks involved in energy and climate matters.

The position

Under the supervision of the Managing Director, the Head of European and International Affairs is responsible for the representation of UFE in Brussels, and advises the organisation’s hierarchy, staff members and member companies on European issues.

Acting as Head of the Brussels Office, he or she will:

  1. Define the activities and priorities of the Brussels team (management of two European Affairs Advisors).
  2. Develop and maintain strong relationships with key influencers in European and national institutions, companies and associations of the energy sector.
  3. Contribute to the preparation of UFE positions. He or she will participate in the various working groups and committees of UFE thereof, providing expertise on European issues.
  4. Prepare and implement the communication and advocacy strategy towards French and European institutions.
  5. Chair and steer UFE’s internal Committee on European Affairs.
  6. Monitor the activities of the European institutions (Parliamentary committees, plenary sessions, Council Working Group and European Commission meetings and publications).
  7. Monitor the institutional, press and industrial developments of interest for the electricity sector (energy, climate, transport, digital).  
  8. Coordinate UFE’s activities with the European associations it is a member of, in cooperation with its member representatives.

Skills and experience required

  1. University degree (master’s or equivalent) in Political Science, European Affairs and/or Energy
  2. Minimum of five years of professional experience in European affairs and energy or relevant field
  3. Excellent knowledge of European institutions, prior experience in the institutions would be an advantage
  4. Strong inter-personal and communication skills
  5. Good knowledge of French and European energy development  
  6. Sound analytical and organisational skills
  7. Prior management experience would be an advantage
  8. Fluent in French and English, other languages an asset

UFE is offering a permanent contract in a young and dynamic team. The position is based in Brussels, but regular trips are to be foreseen (France and Europe).
