REPORTS TO: Finance Director
OVERVIEW:
Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO) unites the producer-, market- and business-facing
activities within the Fairtrade Labelling system. FLO develops the Fairtrade Standards; promotes the
empowerment of Fairtrade-certified producers by supporting them in gaining and maintaining Fairtrade
Certification and capitalizing on market opportunities; and facilitates global Fairtrade markets, to optimise
benefits for producers.
OBJECTIVE/PURPOSE:
The Fundraising and Funding Partnerships Manager is responsible for ensuring that FLO e.V. secures
the external funding necessary to achieve its strategic objectives, and that funding approaches across
the Fairtrade system are consistent with Fairtrade’s strategic direction.
PRINCIPAL ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Funding partner relationships
- Act as primary point of contact for communication and maintain high level relationships with current
funding partners and lead cultivation efforts to expand Fairtrade’s pool of funding partners.
- Coordinate communication with Fairtrade’s consortium of major funding partners and lead on
management functions associated with this group
- Gather relevant strategic and operational information from internal and external sources and
communicate this as appropriate with funding partners
Grant management
- In collaboration with other staff, develop of grant management documentation, e.g. workplans, budgets
- Ensure fulfilment of all contractual obligations to funding partners including timely and accurate
narrative and financial reporting
- Work closely with other FLO business units to ensure full understanding and successful
implementation of externally funded projects
Fundraising
- Monitor government/institutional funding priorities and funding trends
- In collaboration with other parts of Fairtrade, identify respond to funding opportunities that contribute to
the achievement of Fairtrade’s strategic objectives
- Develop and maintain a database of potential new funding partners and seek opportunities to expand
the range of funding partners in accordance with the fundraising strategy
- Identify lead contacts for thematic and/or regional priorities within major funding institutions that could
be relevant for other Fairtrade actors
- Develop and implement ways in which the fundraising capacities of Fairtrade (beyond FLO) are
increased, including training on project cycle management, proposal writing and budget development.
Strategy
- Lead on the development and implementation of an appropriate fundraising strategy that enables
Fairtrade to deliver its overarching financial strategy
Other
- Work closely with other FLO business units to ensure appropriate and accurate communication on
funding partner-related issues
SKILLS REQUIRED:
Knowledge / Job-specific competencies
- Experience in managing development projects, preferably with major bi-lateral funding partners
- Familiarity with tools and concepts used in management of development projects
- Experience in managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders highly desirable
- In depth knowledge of international development environment, including current priorities and trends
for funding partner investment
- Experience in data base management preferable
- Experience working in a developing country highly desirable
- Knowledge of Fairtrade and understanding of Fairtrade’s mission and vision
Professional skill requirements
- Excellent communication and relationship management skills
- Presentation: excellent written and verbal presentation skills
- Good planning, research and analytical skills
- Networking: able to build relationships across a wide range of organizations
- Financial management: skill in budget development for development projects and management of
project-specific funds
- Languages: Fluency in written and spoken English essential. Proficiency in German highly desirable.
Spanish, French and other relevant languages an advantage
Level of education
- University degree preferred (e.g. international development, social science, international relations)
although relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of degree
Personal qualities
- Ability to negotiate amongst diverse stakeholders
- Ability to handle varied, complex and demanding workloads
- Demonstrable personal commitment to sustainable development, social justice and the struggle to end
poverty.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS:
· This is a full-time position.
· An initial one-year contract is offered. It is envisaged that the contract will be renewable after the
initial one year period.
· Location is at FLO e.V. offices in Bonn, Germany
· The working language is English
· Salary as per Collective Bargaining Agreement Scale 6a, commensurate to qualifications and
experience plus attractive benefits package.
· Starting date as soon as possible
· 30 days annual leave per annum
