Greater Birmingham and the West Midlands have a highly successful track record in engaging in European policy, funding programmes and networks. The Greater Birmingham and West Midlands Brussels office (GBWMBO) is a key part of this strategic approach enabling our stakeholders to understand, influence and maximise European policy and funding. Our office represents a range of partner organisations from local government, higher education and business. Our city and region has a long and established presence in Europe, with Birmingham being the first European city to set up an office in Brussels back in 1984.

Role of the European Policy and Funding Advisor

The Greater Birmingham and West Midlands Brussels office is recruiting a European Policy and Funding Advisor to its small team to support the Brussels-based activities of the partnership. A significant proportion of our partners are universities and research organisations from Greater Birmingham and the West Midlands. An understanding and experience of the higher education sector and EU research and innovation policy will therefore be a distinct advantage.

Qualifications and knowledge:

  • Master’s degree
  • Understanding and knowledge of the university sector and EU research and innovation policy
  • Understanding and knowledge of the EU funding programmes and working of the EU institutions
  • Native level fluency in spoken and written English, reasonable knowledge of another EU language
  • Understanding and knowledge of the priorities of Greater Birmingham and the West Midlands

Experience:

  • Experience of working with / in the higher education and university sector
  • Experience of monitoring EU policy and briefing stakeholders on policy developments
  • Experience of identifying and acting upon opportunities to influence EU European policy and funding
  • Experience of identifying and advising on EU funding opportunities
  • Experiencing of working with the EU institutions, in particular the European Commission and European Parliament
  • Experience of working with other Brussels-based organisations such as regional offices and networks such as ERRIN and EUROCITIES

Skills and abilities:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to prioritise workload and work to tight deadlines
  • Ability to work in a client-driven environment and a commitment to high quality customer service
  • Significant experience of stakeholder management and partnership working
  • Self-motivated and ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Experience of presenting to groups and acting in a representative capacity

Salary:

The post will be offered on a permanent Belgian contract. Salary range will be from €2800 to €3500 gross per month dependant on experience, including a 13th month, holiday pay and meal vouchers.
