Environment:
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an international organisation supported by 31 States*. Its prime objectives are the operational production of analyses, medium-range forecasts of weather and ocean waves and seasonal forecasts as well as scientific and technical research directed to the improvement of these forecasts. ECMWF operates a large computing facility including supercomputers, data archiving systems and networks.

Main duties:
The vacancy is in the Meteorological Operations Section of the Operations Department. The work of the Meteorological Operations Section includes the operational verification of all forecasts produced at ECMWF. A comprehensive verification suite has been developed, providing a wide range of procedures to monitor different aspects of the forecasts.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the real-time operational verification suite and will be the main contact for its technical maintenance and support.
He or she will make a range of verification results available on the ECMWF website and contribute to ECMWF verification reports.
The main duties include:
- To maintain the operational verification suite and lead its technical development
- To provide support to users of the system throughout ECMWF
- To collaborate with colleagues in operations and research to further extend the capabilities of the verification package
- To contribute to the support and development of the operational content of the ECMWF website
- To participate in any on-call support provided by the section
- To provide general technical support and advice to colleagues in the section
Qualifications:
A university degree or equivalent is required, together with competence in the development and maintenance of computer applications using object-oriented programming in a Unix environment.
Experience in verification methods, processing of meteorological data (especially GRIB, BUFR), and programming in C++ and Python would be distinct advantages.
Fluency in one of the working languages of the Centre (English, French and German) and a good knowledge of at least one of the other languages are also required.
Staff are normally recruited from among the nationals of the following Member and Co-operating States: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom.
Remuneration:
For Grade A2: within the range of £3,674.00 to £4,907.85 basic salary per month net of tax .
For Grade A3: within the range of £4,533.41 to £6,130.76 basic salary per month net of tax.
In principle, a staff member will be engaged at the lowest step of the lower grade of the post for which he or she is selected.
Exceptionally, recruitment may be at a higher level when this is justified by qualifications and experience.
A deduction is made from the basic salary for the Pension Scheme and for Partial Invalidity (currently 8.8% for the Pension Scheme and 0.2% for Partial Invalidity).
A further 1.46% of basic salary and related allowances is currently deducted for the ECMWF Supplementary Health Insurance Scheme.
Where applicable: household allowance of 6% of basic salary; children’s allowance of £207.56 per child per month;
expatriation allowance of 14% or 18% of basic salary for expatriates;
education allowance for children of expatriates is added.
Starting date: As soon as possible Length of contract: Maximum of four years for initial contract, with the possibility of renewal.
