Background

Bussola Institute is an independent and not-for-profit, non-governmental organization established in Brussels in 2017 as a world-class Research Institute and Think-and-Do-Tank, which is committed to forging multicultural interconnections between the Gulf Countries and the European Union.  The Mission of Bussola Institute is to generate and share knowledge that will foster a better understanding of, and seek solutions to, the political, social, economic, security and cultural issues that affect policy making in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the European Union (EU) regions.

Bussola Institute operates under the direction and guidance of a distinguished Honorary Board and is directed by a Board of Directors.  The day-to-day activates of the Institute are managed by a Secretary General who reports directly to the Board of Directors.

Director of Research

Bussola Institute is seeking to attract a highly effective, dynamic, self-motivated Director of Research, with a proven track record as a successful leader and head of research in a leading university, or in a large, research intensive public or private organization.

Functions

The Director of Research will be responsible for leading a highly professional, proactive research community and will oversee all of Bussola’s research and publication activity.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Director of Research will report directly to the Secretary General of Bussola Institute and will lead and manage a range of research activities that include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Deliver the program of research into successfully completed projects, as advised and directed by the Honorary Board and the Board of Directors
  • Identify and propose a program of future research topics for consideration by the Honorary Board and the Board of Directors
  • Ensure that the publications timetable and the mix of research topics are effectively managed
  • Oversee and manage the in-house research team at Bussola Institute and work collaboratively with all staff across the Institute, in the interests of contributing to a unified organizational response
  • Engage in the development of strong partnerships with top international research-driven organizations, academic institutions and research institutes
  • Engage and oversee authors for the Institute’s commissioned research publications
  • Ensure that the Institute’s research is produced in line with the highest standards of intellectual honesty, research ethics and academic conventions
  • Serve as the editor-in-chief of Bussola Institute’s publications and ensure that all publication work is executed and distributed in a thoroughly professional manner and in confidence, where appropriate or directed
  • Determine, in consultation with the Secretary General and other Bussola Institute colleagues, the most appropriate medium and genre for the publication and promotion of research in any given area
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues at Bussola Institute in planning and organizing events, programs, outreach activities and media engagement to ensure that the Institute’s research activity is optimally articulated and disseminated
  • Play a significant role in representing Bussola Institute in the international arena through participating in and contributing to workshops, seminars, conferences and other events, as appropriate.

Candidate Requirements

The successful candidate will:

  • Hold a PhD Degree or equivalent with at least 8+ years experience of collaborative team management in a dynamic research environment
  • Have a proven track record as a collaborative researcher and an ability to lead and coordinate teams of colleagues in meeting work objective and deadlines 
  • Have significant experience of working with a diverse community of internationally respected organizations, academic institutions, research institutes and individuals
  • Demonstrate sound judgment on complex, inter-linked issues and an ability to present research results in a form that is accessible  
  • Have significant experience of gathering and analyzing information; reviewing literature; conducting analysis, in addition to an in-depth understanding of the policy making process, both formal and informal
  • Demonstrate drive, energy, resilience and enthusiasm, with a strong delivery of results focus and the desire to continually extend the boundaries of the role 
  • Have excellent communication and presentation skills, with strong computer literacy proficiency
  • Have well-developed research networks, strong interpersonal relations and networking skills, and a proven ability to manage, evolve and grow strong networks
  • Possess an excellent command of English, both written and oral - any other language would be an asset
  • As a public face of Bussola Institute, the person appointed will have highly developed communication and advocacy skills and be capable of engaging with and influencing a wide range of stakeholders
  • Ideally, have a good appreciation of the Arab culture, particularly relating to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.
