Bussola Institute is an independent and not-for-profit, non-governmental organization established in Brussels in 2017 as a world-class Research Institute and Think-and-Do-Tank, which is committed to forging multicultural interconnections between the Gulf Countries and the European Union.  The Mission of Bussola Institute is to generate and share knowledge that will foster a better understanding of, and seek solutions to, the political, social, economic, security and cultural issues that affect policy making in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the European Union (EU) regions.

Bussola Institute operates under the direction and guidance of a distinguished Honorary Board and is directed by a Board of Directors.  The day-to-day activates of the Institute are managed by a Secretary General who reports directly to the Board of Directors.

Director of Corporate Affairs

Bussola Institute is seeking a highly motivated, dynamic and experienced Director of Corporate Affairs to lead and manage its Corporate Affairs Division in the areas of finance; human resources management and development; contracts and procurement; administration; property and facilities, as well as planning and performance management.


The Director of Corporate Affairs for Bussola Institute will be responsibility for leading and managing the Institute’s Corporate Affairs Division, including the management of its human, physical and financial resources to ensure maximum utilization, efficiency, effectiveness and quality of service.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Director of Corporate Affairs will report directly to the Secretary General of Bussola Institute and will work in partnership with the senior leadership team in developing and attaining Bussola’s strategic objectives, in accordance with its vision and mission.

The Director’s key duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Lead the development and implementation of comprehensive human resource management systems and practices, that are in compliance with Belgian employment and taxation laws, and related requirements
  • Attract, recruit, motivate and retain highly qualified and professional staff, and develop a strong culture of high performance, teamwork and continuous improvement
  • Support staff on all issues relating to HR, including training programs and development opportunities, as appropriate
  • Manage and oversee all of Bussola Institute’s financial, accounting and statutory reporting functions, to include the timely and accurate preparation of Annual Budgets, Plans and  Financial Statements, monthly statements of accounts, forecasting and management accounting
  • Enforce a high level of financial accountability and budgetary control across Bussola Institute
  • Manage Bussola’s cash flow and forecasting, implement and continually improve the Institute’s financial management systems and procedures, in addition to overseeing the development of strong internal financial controls, and ensuring that appropriate internal audit processes are in place and that an external audit is conducted annually
  • Implement robust contracting and procurement functions
  • Have effective oversight of all Bussola’s assets including property, facilities, ICT and other equipment
  • Have responsibility for monitoring and reviewing options for outsourcing any of Bussola’s non-core functions.

Candidate Requirements

The successful candidate will:

  • Hold a Masters Degree or equivalent, ideally with 8+ years experience and an established record of leadership in a corporate affairs environment, either in Brussels or internationally
  • Have proven experience and ability to undertake the key responsibilities of Director of Corporate Affairs
  • Have experience in human resources management, organizational development and in using HR systems
  • Have significant experience in accounts management, including budgeting, forecasting, monthly financial reporting and audit compliance
  • Have experience of managing facilities and services for a small to medium-sized organization
  • Have a solid track record in organizational performance, monitoring and evaluation frameworks and change management
  • Have an ability to innovate, to create and to implement continuous improvement initiatives
  • Be adaptable, flexible and experienced in developing, monitoring and evaluating multiple projects with multiple deliverables and deadlines
  • Have strong interpersonal relationship and negotiation skills,
  • Be technology aware with experience in software selection, installation and implementation; managing relationships with software vendors, and knowledge of accounting and reporting software
  • Possess an excellent command of English, both written and oral – any other language would be an asset
  • Demonstrate drive, energy, resilience and enthusiasm, with a strong delivery of results focus and the desire to continually extend the boundaries of the role 
  • Preferably, have knowledge of Belgian employment and financial procedures and laws
  • Ideally, have a good appreciation of the Arab culture, particularly relating to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.
