Background

Bussola Institute is an independent and not-for-profit, non-governmental organization established in Brussels in 2017 as a world-class Research Institute and Think-and-Do-Tank, which is committed to forging multicultural interconnections between the Gulf Countries and the European Union.  The Mission of Bussola Institute is to generate and share knowledge that will foster a better understanding of, and seek solutions to, the political, social, economic, security and cultural issues that affect policy making in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the European Union (EU) regions.

Bussola Institute operates under the direction and guidance of a distinguished Honorary Board and is directed by a Board of Directors.  The day-to-day activates of the Institute are managed by a Secretary General who reports directly to the Board of Directors.

Director of Communications, Media and Events Management

Bussola Institute is seeking a highly motivated, dynamic and experienced Director of Communications, Media and Events Management to spearhead the Institute’s strategic use of communications; raise its profile; establish strong relationships with its key partners, and to plan and oversee the Institute’s program of activities and events.

Functions

The Director of Communications, Media and Events Management will be responsible for ensuring that the research and publication activity of the Bussola Institute are optimally articulated and disseminated through its media engagement and through the planning and organization of events, programs and outreach activities, in order to ensure that Bussola’s research is widely understood and has a real and significant impact on policy makers.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Director of Communications, Media and Events Management will report directly to the Secretary General of Bussola Institute and will work closely with the Director of Research and research team to translate Bussola’s research findings into media and public-friendly narrative, through the strategic use of media briefings, events and activities.

The Director’s key duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Lead the building of Bussola’s organizational and operational profile, reputation and its unique brand across the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council regions, under the guidance and direction of the Honorary Board and the Board of Directors
  • Create and propose a strategic communications and events management plan for the Institute, for consideration by the Honorary Board and the Board of Directors
  • Oversee Bussola’s communications and media activities, including the strategic use of social and digital media to optimize, reach, touch and connectivity
  • Develop tailored communications and media strategies to maximize the impact of Bussola’s programs, including targeted communications, designed to influence decision-makers and key stakeholders
  • Develop strong partnerships with top Brussels-based and international journalists, media organizations, academic institutions, research institutes and think-tanks
  • Build strong relationships with key partners across the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council regions, to include members of the institutions of the European Union, Governments and other international organizations
  • Be responsible for Bussola’s website and digital footprint, developing and refreshing them on an ongoing basis to reflect Bussola’s key programs and activities
  • Lead Bussola’s internal and external brand development, brand and style guidelines and the production of videos, brochures, leaflets and other publicity materials
  • Design and lead the Institute’s extensive program of events and activities and oversee the delivery of all Bussola’s special events and activities, in addition to monitoring and controlling all related budgets
  • Manage third-party service providers, where necessary, in the delivery of Bussola’s communications goals
  • Evaluate all events and activities on an ongoing basis to ensure continual improvement and brand alignment
  • Play a significant role in representing Bussola Institute in the international arena through participating in and contributing to other media events, conferences, seminars and activities, where appropriate.

Candidate Requirements

The successful candidate will:

  • Hold a Masters Degree or equivalent, ideally with  8+ years experience and an established record of leadership in a communications, media or events management environment, either in Brussels or internationally
  • Have a mother-tongue equivalent knowledge of English, both written and spoken and a working knowledge of at least one other language
  • Preferably, have a working knowledge of French and Flemish, both written and spoken
  • Have expert written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate highly technical issues into simple and intuitive language that will be easily understood by policy makers, the public and the media
  • Have a deep understanding of social and digital media and the cutting-edge technology that optimizes their use, with experience in managing digital communications, developing websites and using digital tools
  • Ideally, possess a wide network of contacts with Brussels and international media
  • Be an innovative and strategic thinker, who pays attention to detail and has the ability to work effectively under pressure and manage a variety of programs and activities simultaneously
  • Demonstrate drive, energy, resilience and enthusiasm, with a strong delivery of results focus and the desire to continually extend the boundaries of the role 
  • Ideally, have a good appreciation of the Arab culture, particularly relating to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.
