The Deputy Director, Brussels is a new role which will strengthen our leadership and management capacity in Brussels, support the EU and France Director in implementing ONE’s advocacy strategy towards the European Union Institutions, and be responsible for all financial and HR management. The post holder will report to the EU and France Director and line-manage all senior roles in the Brussels team.

The Deputy Director will work closely with senior staff across the organisation to maintain ONE’s engagement with officials and partners in government and civil society to promote and defend ONE’s positions. The Deputy Director will work with the Brussels team to develop and deliver global and national campaigns, activate our members, and engage with external stakeholders. The Deputy Director will also work closely with the Senior Operations Manager in Brussels in managing finance, HR, and projects in support of the EU and France Director. S/he will also contribute to organisational developments across Europe and globally.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of the international development agenda, significant experience in the management of staff, projects and budgets, and experience in political lobbying and of working with the EU institutions. S/he should also have a demonstrable understanding of how creative campaigning, advocacy and media combine to deliver policy change. 

The candidate will also possess strong analytical, planning and communications skills. They will be a strong collaborator and team player with a deep commitment to ONE’s goals and priorities.

The role reports to the EU and France Director and will be based in our Brussels office, with occasional travel to London and other ONE markets.

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL

  • Manage the Brussels team to deliver ONE’s advocacy and campaigning work with the European Institutions, working alongside the EU and France Director and other members of ONE in Europe and across the organization globally.
  • Support the development and implementation of a long-term strategy aiming to strengthen ONE’s political relationships and public support in Brussels.
  • Develop relationships with and represent ONE to EU officials and NGO partners.
  • Work closely with colleagues in France, Germany, the UK, Italy and the Netherlands to ensure ONE’s lobbying efforts with the European institutions achieve maximum impact.
  • Work closely with campaigns and marketing staff across the organization to leverage ONE’s campaign assets, develop ONE’s brand and increase the quality and quantity of ONE membership in key EU countries.
  • Work with the Senior Operations Manager to ensure budgets and resources are in line with the strategic plan and managed effectively throughout the year.
  • Manage the team of staff in Brussels, implement strategic plans through effective project management, establish processes for the team to ensure the smooth running of the office.
  • Responsible for hiring and personnel management including performance and quality of work.
  • Additional duties as determined.

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in international affairs, economics, politics, international development, communications, or other relevant field.
  • A minimum of 10  years’ experience within international development, civil society, media or government, ideally with substantial exposure to European Institutions, with seven years’ experience of working in a senior management position.
  • Experience of effective decision-making and leadership with a proven track-record of managing high-performing people, teams and budgets.
  • Significant experience in project management is required.
  • Good understanding of development issues affecting Africa with related work history in poverty and infectious disease alleviation, advocacy, policy, legislation and/or demonstrable interest in the causes ONE supports.
  • A commitment to ONE’s policy priorities and a clear understanding of the links between policy, lobbying, campaigning and media work.
  • Ability to manage multiple, shifting priorities under tight deadlines while performing in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite.
  • Strong financial management skills.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Fluency in spoken and written English; knowledge of another EU language would be an advantage.

TRAVEL

Occasional travel to London and other ONE markets.
