ENVIRONMENT: The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an international organisation supported by 31 States*. Its prime objectives are the operational production of analyses, medium-range forecasts of weather and ocean waves and seasonal forecasts, as well as scientific and technical research directed to the improvement of these forecasts. MAIN DUTIES:
ECMWF contributes to the VALOR project in the areas of ocean data assimilation using RAPID array data, and assessment of variability/predictability in the North Atlantic region associated with variations in sea-ice concentration. 
 
The work of the consultant will cover the following tasks: 

  • Develop diagnostic tools for the comparison of sea-ice and ocean analysis products against observations, and for the diagnosis of coupled-model simulations of ocean/sea-ice state and variability
  • Implement a version of the LIM sea-ice model (either LIM2 or LIM3) into the IFS/NEMO coupled model used at ECMWF, in collaboration with the EC-EARTH consortium and other relevant scientific partners
  • Implement a basic strategy for the initialization of sea-ice properties in the ECMWF coupled system, compatible with sea-ice modelling and initialization strategies used by collaborating institutions and partners in externally-funded projects

 
QUALIFICATIONS:
A university degree to PhD level or equivalent and, if possible, some post-graduate experience with coupled ocean-atmosphere and ice models on seasonal or longer timescales.
Working languages of ECMWF are English, French and German; fluency in English is essential.
 
 
REMUNERATION:
Typically within the range of £3,674.00 to £5,090.00 per month net of tax, depending upon qualifications, experience, personal situation and eligibility for expatriation allowance. A deduction of either £33.62 per beneficiary or 4.38% of the monthly remuneration will be made for the supplementary health insurance scheme.
 
 
STARTING DATE: Between 1 March and 1 June 2010 (subject to final negotiations).
 
LENGTH OF CONTRACT: 1 year, with the possibility of extension of up to one further year
