About EFA                                                                                                               

The European Free Alliance (EFA) works for a Europe of the Peoples and is composed of 46 member parties that represent stateless nations, regions and minorities from across Europe. As a progressive pro-European political party, the right to self-determination is the cornerstone of EFA’s programme, and is composed of members across the EU, and beyond.

EFA’s office is based in Brussels (Boomkwekerijstraat/Rue de la Pépinière 1, 1000), alongside its youth branch, EFAy, and political foundation, the Coppieters Foundation. EFA works closely with its parliamentary group of MEPs in the European Parliament, and well as the European Alliance in the Committee of the Regions.

About the job offer                                                                                                                             

EFA is seeking to hire a Communications Officer for its office in Brussels. This person will be responsible for the implementation of the external and internal communications strategy of the organisation and will report to EFA’s Director and Bureau.

This is a full-time position for five (5) working days (38 hours) per week as part of an international team.

EFA offers attractive conditions with a competitive salary and additional packages of fringe benefits in line with seniority and work experience. This is a full-time contract, commencing on 6 January 2020, for an initial period of 6 months. After evaluation, an extended, long-term contract may then be offered.

This call is open to candidates with a background in journalism or communications, with knowledge of the EU institutions and relevant experience in political communications -preferably at EU level- and/or as an EU affairs journalist.

A recommendation letter from an EFA member party will be an asset.

Goal of this function

The main tasks of the Communications Officer will be those related to the planning and implementation of the communications strategy of the organisation, both internally and externally, with a particular focus on media relations and press materials, social media and website content management; as well as, to a lesser extent, other tasks related to the daily management and development of the organisation.

Main tasks and responsibilities

External communications

a) Increase the visibility and presence of EFA in European, statewide and national/regional media: from traditional to online media outlets

  • Media relations. Liaise with EU correspondents, local and regional journalists and editors
  • Press releases and other communication materials on EFA-related issues
  • Press clipping
  • Press calls and invitations to events

b) Monitor and manage EFA channels on social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc.) according to the communications strategy

c) Manage and update content of the EFA website on a regular basis, as well as the newsletter

d) Liaise with key stakeholders at EU and international level, such as EU institutions, civil society organizations and NGOs

Internal communications

a) Liaise with EFA member parties to enhance cooperation and regular feedback in the communications field

b) Coordinate with the EFA group in the European Parliament (MEPs, assistants, group advisors, etc.) and the European Alliance Group in the Committee of the Regions

c) Liaise with Coppieters Foundation and EFAy

Skills and competences

Knowledge and technical skills

  • Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Journalism/Communications
  • Full professional capacity or native-level English, both oral and written, and at least one other European language. Knowledge of French or German will be an asset
  • Relevant working experience in political communications -preferably at EU level- and/or as an EU affairs or international journalist will be required
  •  Familiarity with the functioning of the EU institutions and EU policy-making process
  • Excellent computer and content management skills (Office Suite, Wordpress, Mailchimp)
  • Knowledge of semi-professional use of photo and video cameras
  • Basic/medium knowledge of video editing and design software (Adobe Premiere, InDesign, etc.) will be an asset
  • Keen interest in EFA-related matters and values

Other

Selection Procedure

The procedure for the election of the candidate will be as follows:

  • 4 December: a short-list of candidates will be done. Short-listed candidates will be informed and invited for an interview.
  • 10 December: interviews to short listed candidates will be held in the EFA office in Brussels (travel costs will be reimbursed).
  • 13 December: Decision and communication on the selected candidate. The staff will immediately communicate the decision to the selected candidate. Unsuccessful candidates will also be informed.
  • The new Communications Officer will start working on 6th January 2020.
