Climate Alliance is a non-profit association uniting local authorities and indigenous rainforest peoples in their efforts to mitigate climate change. With some 1,700 members spread across 25 European countries, Climate Alliance is the world’s largest city network dedicated to climate action and the only one to set tangible targets: each member city, town and district has committed itself to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 10 percent every 5 years. Recognising the impact our lifestyles can have on the world's most vulnerable people and places, Climate Alliance pairs local action with global responsibility. The network runs awareness raising campaigns, develops tools for climate action planning and fosters coopera-tion with indigenous peoples. Additional work goes into management of the EU initiatives such as the Covenant of Mayors, awareness raising on the EU level, as well as communication and policy work.
The Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy brings together thousands of local authorities who share a long-term vision of promoting and supporting volun-tary action to combat climate change and move to a low emission, resilient soci-ety.
Climate Alliance has been actively involved in the shaping of the Covenant of Mayors in Europe and its extension to other parts of the world since its launch in 2008. Today, Climate Alliance is involved in the consortia managing the regional Covenant offices in Europe, Eastern Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa and Japan and works in close cooperation with the Global Covenant Secretariat. All these re-gional/national Covenants are part of the same Global Covenant alliance and are organised along principles and methods that best suit each region.
