The World Customs Organization (WCO) is an intergovernmental organization, established in 1952, and focused on Customs matters. With its worldwide membership, the WCO is now recognized as the voice of the global Customs community. It is particularly noted for its work in areas covering the development of global standards, the simplification and harmonization of Customs procedures, trade supply chain security, the facilitation of international trade, the enhancement of Customs enforcement and compliance activities, anti-counterfeiting and piracy initiatives, public-private partnerships, integrity promotion, and sustainable global Customs capacity building programs.

BACKGROUND

Customs administrations around the world play a vitally important role in the fight against transnational crime. In order to be effective they require the necessary hardware and software, as well as the related knowledge and skills to implement simplified and improved Customs procedures, with modern Customs operational techniques. The CEN application is a central depositary of enforcement-related information used to track trends and patterns related to illicit trade, enabling efficient risk analysis and targeting.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The clerk will work as part of the CEN Programme team within the Compliance and Facilitation Directorate, and report to the CEN Programme Manager. The selected candidate will also cooperate closely with the Information and Intelligence Centre, within the same directorate to support and assist with maintain accurate and timely data to support trend analysis and inform operations on areas of illicit trade.

The main duties of the position include:

  • Coordinating the production of the WCO Illicit Trade Report
  • Importing data on illicit trade received from Customs administrations to the WCO’s Customs Enforcement Network database
  • Quality checking of data
  • Responding to requests from third parties for data on illicit trade
  • Updating of the WCO’s Enforcement website
  • Assisting in other administrative duties and supporting daily operational objectives as needed
  • Assisting members with maintenance of their CEN accounts
  • Other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

University degree in a relevant field of study (IT, Statistics, Data Science, Business analytics etc.) or an equivalent combination of education, skills, and experience.

Experience

  • Experience working in a data entry and quality assurance capacity. Preferably within a law enforcement environment.
  • The candidate should be able to work independently or as part of a team.

Skills and Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of MS Excel and MS Access
  • Fluency in English and French
  • Knowledge of website content management would be an advantage
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Team player able to work in a multi-cultural environment

CONDITIONS AND RENUMERATION

  • Two year contract
  • Probationary period: 6 months
  • Full-time employment (37.4 Hours weekly), in Brussels, Belgium
  • Annual paid leave
  • Salary commensurate to experience and up to 2750 EUR/month (cost of insurance(s) will be deducted from the salary) based on a short-term contract
  • Basic health insurance coverage
