Job Description
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany) and the outstations are in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).

Reporting directly to the Head of Finance, the Chief Accountant is responsible for all financial and management reporting within EMBL. He/she manages a team of 11 qualified and part qualified staff that covers all the main functions of a classic accounting department. Her/his responsibilities include:

• Management of all financial and management reporting processes
• Delivery of the annual financial statements and acting as key contact point for external audit
• Maintaining and developing the SAP accounting system along with associated reporting systems (including financial aspects of Business Warehouse)
• Managing , training and developing the accounting department
• Control of cash flow and treasury operations
• Processing the finances of EMBL activities including courses, conferences and guesthouses
• Management of issues surrounding value-added and insurance taxes
• Dealing with financial and budgetary issues from management and scientific staff
• Dealing with contributions from Member States

The person appointed will be expected to establish a good working relationship with other departments within EMBL and its outstations as well as with internal and external auditors. Key to success in the role will be effective and transparent communication, the ability to persuade and influence and a sound understanding of financial processes and reporting. 

Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have a recognised qualification in accounting and several years’ experience in the field. Previous experience of working in an international organisation would be an advantage. Organisational skills combined with high service orientation and the ability to work independently and communicate effectively are required. Excellent IT skills particularly Excel and a sound knowledge of ERP systems are a pre-requisite.. The candidate should have at least 3 years’ managerial experience and the proven ability to manage and motivate a team. Excellent working knowledge of English is essential for this position, as is a good knowledge of German.. Tthe knowledge of French would be an advantage.
