The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) seeks applications for the position of a Biostatistician for a permanent contract in Brussels.

The job objective is to devise and implement along with other staff members research on the epidemiology, demographics, risks, health care service provision and burden related to cardiac diseases, starting from heart failure and arrhythmias.

Background of the position

The European Society of Cardiology represents over 90,000 cardiology professionals from across Europe and broader. Its mission is to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease in Europe. With its institutions and bodies provides an array of scientific and educational activities, such as the production and updating of clinical practice guidelines, educational initiatives, pan-European surveys on specific disease areas, prestigious congresses, publication of many of the world's leading journals on cardiology. The ESC recently established in Brussels a European Heart Agency and in its context a Health Policy Unit, to build data bases, to undertake and disseminate research and to elaborate educational and related activities focusing on the economics, management, health policy and epidemiology issues of cardiology.

The Biostatistician will be an employee of this unit supporting its research program. The first project to undertake is to build a epidemiology model of heart failure in Europe. This will be combined with resource utilization data and unit cost data to estimate the burden of disease.

Specific tasks

In your role, you will:

  • Undertake systematic reviews of the literature to search data on disease prevalence
  • Analyze and model data from different sources to build epidemiological models
  • Undertake research and predictive modeling on the epidemiology of heart failure
  • Disseminate evidence with publications and presentations to relevant forums
  • Liaise and network with relevant external bodies, stakeholders, policy making institutions when related to CVD statistics
  • Engage and support internal educational, survey and other relevant initiatives
  • Facilitate the participation to joint research programs with prestigious partners
  • Develop educational initiatives on the epidemiology and burden of cardiac disease

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Post graduate qualifications, skills, and experience in statistics, biostatistics or relevant fields
  • Analyzing data sets (registries, trials, observational, outcome, demographic)
  • Using analytics and modeling packages like Excel and SAS
  • Designing, organizing, implementing and disseminating results of studies
  • Undertaking systematic reviews, meta-analyses, mathematical & statistical modeling
  • Designing, implementing and analyzing multi-country surveys
  • Work independently and in a multinational multi-professional team
  • Ability to work with and reconcile the views of diverse organisations and individuals
  • Administrative, computer, analytical, research, publication and presentation skills
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and preferably other European languages
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including good editorial skills
  • Ability to take initiative, prioritise and work under set deadlines to meet objectives
  • Ability to function accurately and efficiently in a multi-task work environment
  • Ability to consult and negotiate ‘buy in’, detail minded and well organized
  • Stress-resistant and multi-task oriented with international understanding
  • Capacity to interact and build relations with very diverse stakeholders.

Profile

  • Postgraduate studies is related fields (e.g. statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology)
  • + 10 years work experience in relevant academic, policy, consulting or industry setting
  • Experiences in Health Economic area
  • Desire to undertake research focused in cardiology being member of a small research team
