USEFUL INFORMATION

Leading the Audiovisual Production Team, this role ensures the targeted production of video and audio products for traditional and multimedia use, working in close cooperation with the Press Office, other programs and national sections to produce, gather and coordinate audiovisual materials to support Amnesty International’s international media and campaigning priorities. This is a full time position which requires the ability and willingness to work out of office hours and to undertake international travel as required. The position is responsible for ensuring creative and production standards, workflow management of the Audiovisual team and for ensuring Amnesty International’s audiovisual materials appropriately reflect, protect and promote Amnesty International ’s image and reputation. 

JOB PURPOSE:   To lead Amnesty International’s  audiovisual work to advance the organisation’s human rights agenda through the development, production and distribution of targeted audiovisual products. To ensure that Amnesty International is best-placed to take advantage of the opportunities that exist to promote and protect human rights through the use of audiovisual products disseminated on all appropriate media and to ensure the highest possible standards through the production, post-production and disseminations processes

DEPARTMENT PURPOSE:Amnesty International’s Media and Audiovisual Program is responsible for promoting and supporting a culture of effective and coordinated media and audiovisual work across the IS and the movement. The program drives and maintains consistent presentation of Amnesty International’s name and message in the media and oversees media strategy, content, delivery and targeting of Amnesty International’s message in the print and electronic media.

AIIS PURPOSE:  The IS, which operates from a number of sites around the world, gathers and communicates accurate and action-oriented human rights information globally.  We campaign for meaningful human rights change; enable effective human rights activism and work to persuade governments and other actors to uphold universal human rights standards.  We provide strategic leadership, support and advice to the Amnesty International movement globally, fostering Amnesty International’s contribution, presence and public accountability throughout the world.

Main Responsibilities

To develop, implement and be accountable for detailed strategies and work plans to ensure the highest possible standards in gathering, production and dissemination of targeted, timely and effective audio and video products across all appropriate distribution platforms for a diverse range of audiences, within agreed program operational plans.
 
To lead the work of the Audiovisual team through the planning, coordination, production and distribution of work to agreed work plans and standards including priority setting, monitoring progress and managing the team's resources.
 
To oversee or direct production work of the Audiovisual team and coordinate production of audiovisual work across the movement to ensure accessible quality audiovisual products in support of Amnesty Inernational priorities while minimising duplication and maximising consistent image and messaging.
 
To source original audiovisual material which reflects Amnesty International’s human rights concerns and campaign priorities through production, commissioning of external partners, utilizing section expertise or participating in Amnesty International  field missions, as approved by the Program Director.
 
To develop, propose and ensure implementation of standard contracts for commissioned work and charging systems for original Amnesty International audiovisual material to protect the legal, copyright and ethical interests of Amnesty International, in conjunction with the Internal Resources Program.
 
To develop and maintain productive relations with external specialists for the gathering of audiovisual material and production of audiovisual products and with sections to identify audiovisual needs and support and in collaboration with the Internal Resources Program, oversee the running of the audiovisual archive.
 
To undertake or enable audiovisual production on Amnesty International crisis work, high level missions and other special events.
 
To support the organization’s best use of audiovisual material by providing specialist advice within the program, the IS and the movement as appropriate, and by identifying, running and participating in audiovisual training as appropriate in conjunction with the Human Resources Program.
 
To contribute to the development of the program's work through the review of strategies, policies, techniques and materials; participating in developing and adhering to agreed standards; and maintaining an awareness of trends and developments in the audiovisual production field and their implications for Amnesty International's media and audiovisual work.
 
To cover for team members and other program staff as required and to carry out own administrative tasks related to the post in accordance with the guidelines on self-servicing.
 
To monitor progress and adherence to agreed standards, including establishing systems to ensure accountability and reporting.

Person specification

  • Substantial relevant experience in similar role within media or news environment for an international audience.
  • Extensive experience in production of a wide range of broadcast-quality products for multicultural, multilingual audiences.
  • Experience of dealing with and servicing external contracts, particularly broadcast media, producers and production companies.
  • Sound knowledge of all aspects of pre and post-production and scheduling.
  • Sound knowledge of production of international news and current affairs and ability to identify news angles and appropriate outlets for audiovisual materials.
  • Sound knowledge of current and emerging technological developments relating to audiovisual production and their impact on utilizing such technology to advance an organization’s mission.
  • Ability to deal sensitively and ethically on human rights issues and with victims of human rights violations, in the context of audiovisual production work.
  • Experience of project and financial management including Excel.
  • Experience in overseeing archive services.
  • Understanding of current and emerging copyright issues, ethical considerations regarding video or audio recording of individuals and licensing agreements.
  • Knowledge and experience of technical aspects of audiovisual equipment and production
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation and communications skills.
  • Experience in managing a small team and in ensuring work plans and priorities meet deadlines and budget.
  • Ability to maintain flexible approach to changing priorities in high pressure environment.
  • Experience in interviewing and working with range of personalities from diverse backgrounds and situations.

Terms and conditions
Salary: £37,584
Hours: 35 hours per week
Location: Clerkenwell, Central London
Contract duration: Fixed Term Contract ends 30 March 2010
Holidays: Full time staff receive 27 days per annum plus two Amnesty International grace days and statutory and national public holidays .
Office hours: 09.30 - 17.30 or 10.00 - 18.00 by arrangement.
Relocation: Relocation assistance will be available for staff members (and their dependents) recruited from over 80 km/50 miles from the International Secretariat office in which the post is based.
Life insurance: 4 x gross salary.
Travel loan: Interest free travel loan for bus, underground, or rail travel to work (no qualifying period).
Pension:  After six consecutive months of service you will automatically be enrolled in the Amnesty International Superannuation Scheme.  This is a defined contribution to which Amnesty International contributes 7% of gross salary and will match individual employee contributions up to an additional 3%.
