Reports to: Audiovisual Producer for workflow management.  Program Director for line management. 
This post manages: This job has no line management responsibilities but supervises team volunteers, as appropriate
Other key relationships: All Media and Audiovisual Program staff, Internal Resources staff, Regional staff, Campaigns staff, OSG, Sections, Broadcasters and external production outlets

USEFUL INFORMATION:
As part of the Audiovisual team, this role contributes to the targeted creation, production and distribution of video and audio products for traditional and multimedia use. The role works in close cooperation with the AV Team, the Press Office, other programs and national sections to produce and coordinate AV materials to support Amnesty Internation’s international media and campaigning priorities and which reflect and protect Amnesty International’s image and reputation. This is a full time position which requires the ability and willingness to work out of office hours and to undertake international travel as required

JOB PURPOSE:   To coordinate and produce Amnest International international audiovisual work to advance the organisation’s human rights agenda through the development, production and distribution of targeted audiovisual products which raise awareness of Amnesty International’s work to promote and protect human rights, support Amnesty International’s global campaigns and mobilise a growing number of supporters to the movement.

DEPARTMENT PURPOSE: Amnesty International’s Media and Audiovisual Program is responsible for promoting and supporting a culture of effective and coordinated media and audiovisual work across the IS and the movement. The program drives and maintains consistent presentation of Amnesty International’s name and message in the media and oversees media strategy, content, delivery and targeting of Amnesty International’s message in the print and electronic media.
 
ORGANIZATION PURPOSE: The International Secretariat, which operates from a number of sites around the world, gathers and communicates accurate and action-oriented human rights information globally. We campaign for meaningful human rights change; enable effective human rights activism and work to persuade governments and other actors to uphold universal human rights standards. We provide strategic leadership, support and advice to the Amnesty International movement globally, fostering Amnesty International’s contribution, presence and public accountability throughout the world.
 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To coordinate and produce creative, targeted, broadcast-quality audiovisual products for a diverse range of audiences and mediums within agreed program operational plans, which reflect Amnesty International’s organizational and campaigning priorities and which are consistent with Amnesty International’s image and reputation.
  • To contribute to the development and implementation of detailed strategies and work plans to ensure the acquisition, production and distribution of targeted, timely and effective audio and video products for traditional and non-traditional use and for a diverse range of audiences, within agreed program operational plans.  
  • To develop concepts, briefs, project proposals and scripts for audiovisual work in collaboration internal and external stakeholders as required.
  • To liaise with and service broadcast media and independent producers in conjunction with the Press Office, including pitching and facilitating requests for audiovisual material,  coordinating interview and/or filming schedules in the IS, and distributing audiovisual material to the media.
  • To develop and where appropriate implement project budgets for audiovisual productions.
  • To schedule the production of IS audiovisual products in conjunction with relevant teams or Amnesty International’s sections, including research, translation, copyright, duplication and distribution to the movement of audiovisual products.
  • To coordinate sourcing of original audiovisual material and/or coordinate or direct production work within the team which reflects Amnesty International’s human rights concerns and campaign priorities through commissioning external partners, utilizing section expertise or participating in Amnesty International field missions, as agreed.  
  • To develop and maintain productive relations with external specialists for the gathering of audiovisual material and production of audiovisual products and with sections to identify audiovisual needs and support, in collaboration with the Internal Resources Program. 
  • To agree in conjunction with the International Resource Program, systems for reviewing, logging and accessing Amnesty International’s original material. 
  • To support the organization’s best use of audiovisual material by providing specialist advice within the program, the International Secretariat and the movement as appropriate, and by identifying and participating in audiovisual training as appropriate in conjunction with the Human Resources Program. 
  • To cover for team members and other program staff as required. The Audiovisual Production Coordinator may be asked to deputize for the Audiovisual Producer. 
  • To carry out own administrative tasks related to the post in accordance with the guidelines on self-servicing and to monitor progress and adherence to agreed standards, including establishing systems to ensure accountability and reporting.

  • News and current affairs media increasingly use Amnesty International audiovisual materials enabling Amnesty International human rights concerns to be secured on the news agenda.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in similar role in international organization or news/current affairs environment with demonstrated ability to identify news angles and distribution outlets.
  • Experience in the production of audiovisual materials for international audiences.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging technological developments relating to audiovisual production and impact on organization’s ability to communicate its messages.
  • Experience in preparation of operational and project budgets, as well as processing and tracking invoice payments, as well as preparing and monitoring detailed work schedules in a production environment with internal and external partners.
  • Experience of project and financial management.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining administrative systems, word processing and database programs.
  • Advanced liaison skills including relationship management of external producers, coordination of filming schedules and ensuring compliance with agreed budgets and briefs.
  • Understanding of current and emerging copyright issues, ethical considerations regarding video or audio recording of individuals and licensing agreements.
  • Experience of liaising with an archive service, including submitting requests for work and processing and monitoring invoices from archive services.
  • Ability to coordinate the booking, storage, maintenance and purchase of audiovisual equipment and knowledge of technical aspects of audiovisual equipment.
  • Willingness to participate in developing and implementing audiovisual training programs.
  • Ability to deal sensitively and ethically on human rights issues and with victims of human rights violations, in the context of audiovisual production work.
  • Strong interpersonal, negotiation and written communications skills
  • Ability to maintain flexible approach to changing priorities in high pressure environment

Public or other activity, affiliation to or support for any group or organization, personal association or other factor which may generate a real or perceived conflict of interest with Amnesty International's principles (specifically independence and impartiality), or raise a security concern, or otherwise prevent the candidate from carrying out key functions of the specific post and would therefore disqualify the candidate from being appointed.

terms and conditions

Salary: Full time salary of £31,104 per annum  
Hours: 35 hours per week
Location: Clerkenwell, central London
Contract duration: Contract ends 28th May 2010
Holidays: Full time staff receive 27 days per annum plus two Amnesty International grace day and statutory and national public holidays .
Office hours: 09.30 - 17.30 or 10.00 - 18.00 by arrangement
Relocation:  A generous relocation assistance package will be available for staff members (and their dependents) recruited from over 80 km/50 miles from the International Secretariat office in which the post is based.
Life insurance: 4 x gross salary  
Travel loan: Interest free travel loan for bus, underground, or rail travel to work (no qualifying period)
Pension: If you serve 6 consecutive months of service you will be automatically enrolled in the Amnesty International Superannuation Scheme.  This is a defined contribution to which Amnesty International contributes 7% of gross salary and will match individual employee contributions up to an additional 3%.

Health and Safety: All staff are required to comply with Amnesty International's policy and rules relating to Health and Safety and its security regulations at work.
Work Permit: Will it be possible to obtain a UK work permit for this post? Possibly, depending upon individual eligibility under the Home Office's points based system. However the post is a fixed term 6 mnth contract and associated salary of this role may make it ineligible for sponsorship under the Home Office's points based system. Probation: A 3 month probation period will be included in the contract for this position.
