DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The incumbent will work in the Terminology and Reference Unit of the Court Interpretation and Translation Section, within the Division of Court Services, Registry, under the direct supervision of the Terminologist. The incumbent will be expected to perform the following duties:

a) Monitor documentation and other materials and identify changes, developments, linguistic inconsistencies and variations in the terminology used at the Court;
b) Identify the need for the creation of legal and judicial terminology in the working and official languages, as well as in languages used for the proceedings;
c) Standardize terminology, prepare multilingual glossaries and create terminological records for the terminology database;
d) Answer terminology requests from language staff of the Section, from staff members of other Units/Sections of the Court, from free-lance translators and interpreters, or from other external stakeholders;
e) Participate in maintaining the language tools of the section;
f) Conduct training sessions for users of the language tools of the section and contributors to the terminology database;
g) Perform other duties as required.
 
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
The successful candidate will possess:
a) Advanced university degree in translation and/or terminology, linguistics, or law (preference will be given to candidates holding a degree in terminology);
b) Two years of relevant experience (four years with a first level university degree);
c) High level of proficiency in either English or French, with excellent knowledge of the other working language; good knowledge of one other official or situation/case language would be considered as an asset;
d) Solid writing and editiorial skills, good analytical skills, ability to spot errors and inconsistencies in a text; firm grasp of research techniques;
e) Ability to use a variety of computer applications and proficiency in using language tools including terminology databases and translation memory systems; proficiency with MultiTrans would be considered as an asset;
f) Good interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people of different national, linguistic and cultural backgrounds with sensitivity and respect for diversity;
g) Proven ability to prioritise and to work effectively to deadlines;
h) Proven ability to work efficiently as part of a team.

KNOWLEDGE OF LANGUAGES
Fluency in both working languages of the Court, English and French, is essential (with high level of proficiency in one and excellent knowledge of the other). Good knowledge of one other official or situation/case language of the Court would be considered as an asset.
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to take a written terminology test.
